RAILCATS COME FROM BEHIND; COMPLETE THREE-GAME SWEEP WITH A 5-4 WIN

 

GARY, IN-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (20-21) scored two runs in the 8th inning to overtake the Joliet JackHammers (15-26) and earn a 5-4 win before 2,950 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Sunday afternoon.

 

Joliet sent seven men to the plate and scored two runs on three hits in the 2nd inning. C Phil Avlas (1-4) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a single by 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-3). LF Tydus Meadows (0-0) walked to load the bases. Meadows immediately left the game with an undisclosed injury and Wally Backman, Jr. (0-3) pinch-ran for him.

 

1B Freddie Thon (1-4) struck out and DH Tim Alberts (1-3), in his first game since June 11 in Schaumburg returning from injury, lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Avlas for a 1-0 Joliet lead.

 

CF Adam Klein (1-4) smacked an RBI single to score Pinckney and make it a 2-0 Joliet lead.

 

The RailCats scored an unearned run against Joliet RHP Rory Shortell (2-2) in the 3rd inning. 3B Mike Rohde (2-3) reached base on a single and went to second base when C Anthony Esquer (1-3) reached on an error. CF Rob Marconi (0-2) sacrificed a bunt to move both runners into scoring position.

 

LF Mike Massaro (1-3) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Rohde to make it 2-1.

 

The RailCats scored two more runs in the 5th inning to take a 3-2 lead. Rohde led off the inning with a groundout and Esquer singled. Marconi grounded into a fielder’s choice that retired Esquer at second base. Marconi stole second base and scored on a triple by LF Mike Massaro (1-3).

 

Massaro then scored on a throwing error to give the RailCats a 3-2 lead.

 

The JackHammers came back to score two runs in the 8th inning. SS Kevin Rios (2-5) led off the inning with a triple and scored on a single by LF Brad Correll (2-4). Avlas grounded out to move Correll to second base. Pinckney walked and Backman, Jr. reached on a fielder’s choice that erased Pinckney at second base.

 

Thon reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher Kyle Heine for a 4-3 lead.

 

Joliet could not hold the lead with Gary scoring two runs in the 8th inning to take a 5-4 advantage. 2B Chris Cararra (0-4) grounded out and SS Jay Pecci (0-3) worked the count 1-2 before hitting a foul ball directly off the home plate umpire Bill Lopina’s neck. The game was delayed by 21 minutes while 1B umpire Harry Fredenburg got ready to resume the duties behind home plate. The at-bat ended with Pecci hit by a pitch.

 

1B Steve Haake (2-4) followed with an RBI double to score Pecci and RF Jordan Czarniecki (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Haake for a 5-4 Gary advantage.

 

Shortell lasted seven and one-thirds innings and allowed five runs, (three earned runs), on eight hits to suffer the loss.
