JACKHAMMERS COME BACK FOR A 5-4 WIN

JOLIET-The Joliet JackHammers (10-18) scored four runs in the 6^th inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and come back for a 5-4 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes (20-7) at Silver Cross Field before 2,881 fans at Silver Cross Field on Monday night. With the win, the JackHammers have won four out of their last six games.

The Goldeyes struck first with two runs in the 2^nd inning against Joliet LHP Ryan Gehring (1-1). DH Juan Diaz (1-4) led off with a double and scored on a double by LF Dee Brown (1-4) for a 1-0 Winnipeg lead. CF Cory Patton (2-4) reached base on an error assessed to the Joliet 2B Gary Harris.

Winnipeg had runners at first and third base with no one out for 2B Josh Asanovich (1-3), who grounded into a double play. Brown scored from third base for a 2-0 Goldeyes lead.

The JackHammers offense got things going in the 4^th inning on what they thought was a two-run inning. 1B Freddie Thon led off the inning by popping out. DH Tydus Meadows (2-4) hit a single and 3B Isaac Omura (1-4) lined out. LF KC Herren (1-4) hit a double to move Meadows up to third base. SS Danny Cox (2-3), just signed to a contract before the game, lined an RBI single scoring both Meadows and Herren. After Herren scored, the Goldeyes appealed the run at third base. Herren did not touch third base and was called out on the appeal. The JackHammers came within one run at 2-1.

Gehring settled down to pitch seven innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He walked one man and struck out three Goldeyes to pick up the win.

The JackHammers pounded out six hits against Goldeyes pitching in the 5^th inning. C Phil Avlas (1-4) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a single by Thon. Meadows smacked a base hit to tie the game at 2-2.

Omura came up to the plate and hit a ball off the glove of Goldeyes RHP Bear Bay (4-1). Bay threw wide of third base to try and force out Thon. The Joliet 1B scored on the error assessed to Winnipeg 3B Adam Frost for a 3-2 Joliet lead.

After Herren hit into a fielder’s choice where Meadows was retired at the plate, Cox struck out for the second out in the inning. CF Adam Klein (1-4) and 2B Gary Harris (2-4)responded with back-to-back singles for a 5-2 Joliet lead.

The Goldeyes tacked on single runs in the 8^th and 9^th innings to come within one run at 5-4 but RHP Drew Shetrone closed the door for his 1^st save of the season in the 9^th inning.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers signed IF Danny Cox to a 2009 contract before the game. Cox last played in 2009 in time split between three affiliates in the Yankees organization: Low A Charleston, High A Tampa and AAA Scranton Wilkes-Barre.

To make room for him on the active roster, the JackHammers released IF Ryan Arcadia.

The JackHammers start a three-game series with the Schaumburg Flyers on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m. The Flyers send RHP Dustin Glant (4-1, 2.85) to the mound against Joliet RHP Jason Richardson (1-4, 3.06). It’s Family Night with a special 6:05 first pitch. Kids that participated in the National City Jammer’s Book Buddies Program can exchange their reading club vouchers for tickets to the game.
