JACKHAMMERS BREAK OUT FOR A 6-2 WIN IN SCHAUMBURG

 

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (7-16) received five strong innings from RHP Grant Johnson (1-3) and DH Joey Gomes (2-4) hit two crucial RBI for a 6-2 win over the Schaumburg Flyers (14-8) before 3,810 fans at ALEXIAN Field on Tuesday night.

 

Joliet got on the board in the 1st inning with two runs scoring against Schaumburg LHP Edwin Almonte (2-1). CF Adam Klein (0-4) led off the game by popping out and SS Kevin Rios (1-5) struck out. C Phil Avlas (2-5) reached on an error by Flyers SS Travis Brown. He proceeded to steal second base to get a runner in scoring position for 1B Freddie Thon (1-3).

 

Thon hit an RBI single to score Avlas for a 1-0 Joliet lead. He moved to second base on a throwing error by the Flyers left fielder TJ Wilson. Gomes followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 JackHammers advantage,

 

The Flyers scored a single run in the 1st inning against Johnson. LF TJ Wilson (0-5) led off the inning by striking out. SS Travis Brown (0-4) worked a walk and 2B Jose Valdez (1-4) singled him to second base. 3B Vince Harrison (2-4) reached on an error to score Brown and cut the JackHammers lead to 2-1.

 

The JackHammers scored two runs in the 2nd inning. LF Tim Alberts (2-3) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a groundout by RF KC Herren (0-3). Alberts was caught off the bag at third base on a “squeeze” attempt for the second out with 2B Ryan Arcadia (3-4) at the plate. Arcadia finished his at-bat with a single and then stole second base. Klein followed with a walk to put runners at first and second base for Rios.

 

The Joliet SS hit an RBI single to score Arcadia and make it a 3-1 Joliet advantage. Avlas singled to score Klein and make it 4-1 Joliet.

 

After the Flyers scored a run in the 2nd inning, Johnson settled down. He allowed two runs on six hits over his five innings pitched, walking two and struck out two men to earn the victory.

 

Joliet scored single runs in the 5th and 8th innings. In the 5th inning, Avlas led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on sacrifice bunt by Thon. Gomes hit an RBI single to score Avlas for a 5-2 Joliet lead.

 

The JackHammers finished off the scoring in the 8th inning. 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-4) led off the inning with a single. Alberts tried to sacrifice Pinckney to second base. Flyers RHP Jim Popp threw high to first base and drew 2B Jose Valdez off of the bag. Alberts was called safe and credited with a sacrifice bunt. Popp was charged with an error as Pinckney moved to second base.

 

Herren laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Pinckney to third base. Arcadia smacked an RBI single to score Pinckney and give the JackHammers a 6-2 lead.

 

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers re-signed RHP Jason Novak to a contract before the game tonight. Novak, a native of Lockport, last appeared in a game for the JackHammers on May 26 in Kansas City. He had a 0-0 record with a 5.40 ERA prior to his release. To make room for him on the active roster, the JackHammers released IF Jimmy Davenport.

 

The JackHammers head to ALEXIAN Field to continue a three-game series with the Schaumburg Flyers on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The JackHammers will send LHP Ryan Gehring (0-0, 4.11) to the mound against RHP Dustin Glant (3-1, 3.18) for the Schaumburg Flyers.
