RALCATS DEFEAT JACKHAMMERS 7-1

 

GARY, IN-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (10-11) utilized a five-run 5th inning to beat the Joliet JackHammers 7-1 before 2,613 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Saturday night.

 

The RailCats broke through for their first runs of the game against Joliet RHP Aaron Trolia (1-4). CF Rob Marconi (2-4) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a single by SS Jay Pecci (2-4). Both runners advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch. DH Steve Haake (0-2) walked to load the bases.

 

RF Jordan Czarniecki (1-3) stepped up to the plate and hit a bases-clearing double to give Gary a 3-0 lead.

 

The Railcats would tack on two more runs to make 5-0 at the end of four innings.

 

Trolia pitched six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out three.

 

Gary tacked on two more runs in the 7th inning against Joliet LHP Devin Anderson. LF Mike Massaro (1-4) hit a one-out single and scored on a triple by Marconi. The center fielder went all the way around the bases and scored on an error in the outfield for a 7-0 advantage.

 

The JackHammers scored a single run in the 8th inning. C Tug Gillingham (1-4) struck out to lead off the inning. CF Adam Klein (2-4) hit a single and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Ryan Arcadia (0-1) pinch-hit for SS Kevin Rios (2-3) and worked a walk. Newcomer Jamie McGraw (0-1), just signed to a contract before the game, pinch-hit for LF Phil Avlas (2-3) and struck out. 1B Freddie Thon (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Klein to make it 7-1.

 

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers signed McGraw to a contract before the game. The Oregon native started the season with the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League, where he appeared in six games. He began his career in 2008 as a 40th round draft pick by the Texas Rangers. He hit .325 with no home runs and 9 RBI for the Texas Rangers rookie league team in 2009. To make room for McGraw, Joliet released IF Mike Garcia.
