RAILCATS WIN 5-2 IN JOLIET

 

JOLIET, IL-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (8-11) scored five runs on 11 hits against the Joliet JackHammers (5-13) for a 5-2 win before 2,208 fans at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night. It was the RailCats second win in a row.

 

The RailCats scored two runs in the 2nd inning against Joliet starter Grant Johnson (0-3). RF Steve Haake (2-4) led off the inning with a walk and scored on a double by LF Jordan Czarniecki (2-5). SS Jeff Beachum (1-1) hit a sacrifice bunt to move Czarniecki to third base. C Brett Wallace (2-3) hit an RBI single to score Czarniecki and make it 2-0 Gary.

 

The JackHammers scored a run in the 2nd inning to cut the Gary lead down to 2-1. 1B Freddie Thon (1-4) hit a leadoff double. DH Joey Gomes (2-4), in his first game back from injury, grounded out to second base to move Thon to third base. Thon scored on a double by LF Tim Alberts (3-4) to cut the lead to 2-1.

 

Gary scored a single run in the third inning. CF Mike Massaro (0-5) led off the inning with a groundout and 2B Eric McNamee (2-5) flew out to right field. 1B Mike Rohde (1-5) singled and stole second base. Rohde went to third base on a throwing error by Joliet catcher Phil Avlas. Haake hit an RBI single to score Rohde for a 3-1 Gary advantage.

 

Gomes hit a solo home run in the 3rd inning to get the JackHammers within one run at 3-2.

 

The RailCats sealed the win with two runs in the 5th inning against Joliet LHP Devin Anderson. McNamee led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Rohde and Haake both popped out. Czarniecki hit an RBI single to score McNamee and make it 4-2.

 

After Czarniecki stole second base, Beachum was hit by a pitch. DH Isaac Omura (1-3) walked to load the bases and Wallace received a bases-loaded walk to force in Czarniecki for a 5-3 advantage.

 

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers released OF Horace Lawrence before the game to make room for Gomes. Gomes last played in Kansas City on May 27. He had been on the disabled list with a right leg injury.

 

The JackHammers shift their series to Gary for the first of three games with the RailCats over the weekend. On Friday night, LHP Ryan Gehring (0-0, 5.79) takes the mound for the JackHammers. He’ll be opposed by LHP Onan Masaoka (0-3, 8.66).
