JACKHAMMERS WIN 7-5 IN GARY

 

GARY, IN-The Joliet JackHammers (5-11) scored two runs in the 9th inning to break a 5-5 tie and give the club a 7-5 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (6-11)  before 5,650 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Tuesday morning. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for Joliet.

 

The RailCats got on the board with two runs in the 1st inning against Joliet starting pitcher Brad Mumma. DH Mike Massaro (1-4) flew out to left field. CF Rob Marconi (1-4) followed with a one double. 2B Eric McNamee (1-2) received a walk to put runners at first and second base.

 

RF Steve Haake (1-3) hit a two-run triple to score both Marconi and Massaro for a 2-0 Gary lead.

 

Gary scored two runs in the 2nd inning against Mumma to jump out to a 4-0 lead. 1B Mike Rohde (2-4) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a single by C Anthony Esquer (1-4). SS Jeff Beachum (2-3) singled to load the bases.

 

Massaro smacked an RBI single to Rohde for a 3-0 Gary lead. Esquer moved to third base on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly to Rob Marconi (1-4) for a 4-0 Gary lead.

 

The JackHammers came back in the 4th inning with three runs thanks to 2B Jimmy Davenport (2-4). C Phil Avlas (2-5) led off the inning with a double. 1B Freddie Thon (1-5) flew out to right field. DH Tim Alberts (1-3) singled and 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-3) struck out. RF K.C. Herren (0-2) walked to load the bases. Davenport deposited a double into left centerfield to clear the bases and get the JackHammers within one run at 4-3.

 

Joliet scored two runs in the 6th inning to take a 5-4 lead. Alberts led off the inning with a walk. Pinckney hit a double to right field, pushing Alberts to third base. He scored on a throwing error by the right fielder Steve Haake.

 

Davenport then singled to score Pinckney for a 5-4 Joliet advantage.

 

Mumma pitched six innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out two.

 

In the 8th inning, McNamee hit a one-out single against Joliet RHP Drew Shetrone. Manager Wally Backman replaced Shetrone and inserted LHP Ryan Paul (1-1) into the game. Paul allowed a walk to RF Steve Haake to put runners at first and second base. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position for LF Jordan Czarniecki (0-3). His sacrifice fly scored McNamee to tie the game at 5-5.

 

In the 9th inning, the JackHammers took the lead for good. LF Horace Lawrence (1-3) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base when CF Adam Klein (0-3) reached first on an error.

 

SS Kevin Rios (2-5) hit a single to score Lawrence and Avlas singled to score Klein and round out the scoring at 7-5.

 

Paul picked up the win in his one inning of work. RHP Jason Richardson logged the final two outs for his 4th save.

 

The series between the two clubs shifts to Silver Cross Field on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Come to Silver Cross Field for a Winning Wednesday!
