RASCALS TAKE DOWN GRIZZLIES IN OPENER
The River City Rascals scored a run on three hits in the top of the first inning Friday night, then cruised to a 7-1 win over the Gateway Grizzlies in front of 6,011 at GCS Ballpark. It was the Frontier League opener for both teams.
River City (1-0) would extend the lead to 6-0 before the Grizzlies ever got on the board. The Grizzlies (0-1) finally broke through with a run on three hits in the sixth. Chad Rothford accounted for the only Grizzlies’ RBI, driving in the run with a single. Stephen Douglas and Brandon Peters each also had hits in the inning. Douglas finished with a pair of hits for the Grizzlies, who had just four.
Kevin Reynolds led the way for River City. Reynolds was 4-5 with three singles, a double and an RBI. Scott Robinson was 3-5 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs.
Jake Laber (1-0) earned the win for River City. Laber allowed just the run on four hits over six innings. He struck out four. Mark Brackman suffered the loss for the Grizzlies. Brackman managed just 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits. Tom Vesely allowed a pair of runs in five innings of relief.
The two teams will continue the series with a split double-header Saturday. First pitch for game one is 12:05 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon, Mo. Game two will feature a 7:05 start at GCS Ballpark.
