GOLDEYES COME BACK FOR A 5-4 WIN

JOLIET-The Winnipeg Goldeyes (10-3) scored two runs in the top of the 9^th inning to beat the Joliet JackHammers 5-4 before 2,127 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night. RF Kevin West (2-5) hit the game-winning double for Winnipeg.

Joliet struck first with three runs in the 1^st inning against Goldeyes left-hander Daniel Haigwood. CF Adam Klein (3-4) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a throwing error by Haigwood. LF Horace Lawrence (0-5) grounded out to second base. Klein moved to third base on the out. C Phil Avlas (0-3) worked a walk to put runners on first and third base for 1B Freddie Thon (1-5).

Thon responded with a two-run double to give Joliet a 2-0 lead. He moved to third base on a throwing error by Goldeyes 2B Josh Asanovich on the relay throw. DH Tim Alberts (1-4) grounded out to plate Thon for a 3-0 JackHammers lead.

The Goldeyes began chipping away at the lead with a single run in the 2^nd inning. CF Cory Patton (1-4) smacked a solo home run over the right field wall against the JackHammers starting pitcher Rory Shortell to make the score 3-1.

Winnipeg tied the game by scoring two runs in the third inning. C Dustin Richardson (2-3) led off the inning with a single and advanced to scoring position at third base when 3B Adam Frost (2-4) reached on a two-base error. SS Wes Long (2-4) hit a two-run single to plate both men for a 3-3 tied score.

Shortell pitched well enough to win on Saturday. He allowed three runs on six hits in six innings pitched.

Joliet took the lead with a run in the 6^th inning. Alberts started the frame with a double and moved to third base on a single by 3B Andrew Pinckney (2-4). SS Kevin Rios (1-4) hit into a fielder’s choice. The Goldeyes retired Pinckney at second base. Alberts scored for a 4-3 Joliet lead.

In the 9^th inning, Richardson led off for Winnipeg against JackHammers closer Jason Richardson (0-2). 3B Adam Frost (2-4) followed with a solo home run over the right field wall for a 4-4 tied score. Long hit a double and moved to third base on a groundout by 3B Brent Metheney (0-4). RF Kevin West (2-5) doubled in Long for a 5-4 Goldeyes lead.

The JackHammers mounted a mini-comeback in the 9^th against Goldeyes closer Matt Davis. Mike Garcia (1-1) pinch-hit for 2B Jimmy Davenport (0-3) and singled. He was immediately replaced by pinch-runner Ryan Arcadia. Klein singled to move Arcadia to second base. Davis retired the next three JackHammers hitters to pick up his 5^th save.

The JackHammers and Goldeyes wrap up their series on Sunday night. RHP Bear Bay (2-0, 4.96) gets the start for the Winnipeg Goldeyes against RHP Aaron Trolia (1-2, 5.14) for the JackHammers. The JackHammers will host a family autograph session with players and coaches and players on the field at the end of the game.
