GOLDEYES HAMMER JACKHAMMERS 11-3

 

JOLIET- The Winnipeg Goldeyes (9-3) pounded 11 runs on 18 hits to beat the Joliet JackHammers (4-8) by a score of 11-3 before 3,550 fans at Silver Cross Field on Friday night. The Goldeyes utilized a five-run, third inning and a solid performance from right-hander Ace Walker (6.2 IP, 1R, 4H) for the victory.

 

The Goldeyes got on the board in the 1st inning on a solo home run by 1B Brent Metheney (3-6). He pulled the first pitch he saw from Joliet starter Grant Johnson (0-2) over the right-field wall and onto “power alley” at Silver Cross Field for a 1-0 Joliet lead.

 

In the Goldeyes’ 3rd inning, 3B Adam Frost (3-5) grounded out and SS Wes Long (1-6) flew out to center field. Metheney reached base with a single. RF Kevin West (2-5) and DH Juan Diaz (1-5) each followed with walks. Diaz’s walk loaded the bases for CF Cory Patton (2-5). He ripped a two-run double to give Winnipeg a 3-0 lead.

 

Patton’s double pushed Diaz to third base for Dee Brown (4-5), who ripped a two-run double to score both runners and make it 5-0. At the end of the inning, the Goldeyes had a 6-0 lead.

 

Johnson left the game after two and two-thirds innings pitched. He allowed six runs on six hits, walking two and striking out one man.

 

The JackHammers got on the board with a run in the 4th inning. C Phil Avlas (2-4) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a pop out by 1B Freddie Thon (0-3). 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-4) then reached base on an error to score Avlas to cut the Winnipeg lead to 6-1.

 

The Goldeyes scored single runs in the 5th and 6th innings before Brown smacked a two-run home run in the 7th inning. He finished with five RBI as the Goldeyes took a 10-1 lead.

 

In the 8th inning, the JackHammers scored two runs against Goldeyes right-hander Andrew Cruse. LF Horace Lawrence (0-4) led off with a walk and moved to third base on a single by Avlas. Mike Garcia (1-1) stepped up to the plate to pinch-hit for Thon and proceeded to hit an RBI double to score Lawrence for a 10-2 lead. After Pinckney struck out, DH Tim Alberts (1-3) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Garcia to bring the JackHammers within seven runs at 10-3.

 

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers made a plethora of roster moves on Friday, putting DH Joey Gomes on the disabled list and removing RHP Grant Johnson from the DL. The JackHammers also signed 2B Jimmy Davenport and OF Horace Lawrence. Davenport was released out of spring training with the Mariners organization having last played at High A High Desert in 2008.

 

Joliet and Winnipeg continue their three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.  The Goldeyes send LHP Daniel Haigwood (0-0, 5.40) to the mound against RHP Rory Shortell (1-0, 5.06) for the JackHammers.
