FLYERS COME-FROM-BEHIND FOR A 12-9 WIN

 

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Schaumburg Flyers (3-4) scored seven runs in the 7^th inning to erase a 9-5 Joliet lead en route to a 12-9 win over the Joliet JackHammers (3-5) before 3,280 fans at ALEXIAN Field on Friday night.

 

The JackHammers scored three runs in the 1^st inning against Flyers LHP Carmen Pignatiello. CF Adam Klein (1-4) led off the inning with a single and stole second base. SS Kevin Rios (1-4) worked a walk and DH Joey Gomes (2-5) singled to load the bases.

 

1B Freddie Thon (1-3) lifted a sacrifice fly to score Klein for a 1-0 Joliet. C Phil Avlas (2-5) followed with an RBI single to plate Rios and make it 2-0. 3B Andrew Pinckney (2-5) doubled to right field to bring Gomes home for a 3-0 Joliet lead.

 

The Flyers came back to score two runs against Joliet starter Rory Shortell in the 2^nd inning. C Richard Mercado (1-5) led off the inning with a single. Shortell struck out Flyers 1B Jason Colson (3-5) and issued a walk to LF Jeff Dunbar (2-4). SS Travis Brown (1-4) struck out and RF Victor Ferrante (2-4) walked to load the bases. CF Julius Thames (2-6) hit a two-run single to score Mecado and Dunbar and bring the Flyers within one run at 3-2.

 

Joliet played aggressive baseball in the 4^th inning to get another run across home plate. Pinckney led off the inning by striking out. RF Tim Alberts (1-2) hit a one-out double and LF K.C. Herren (1-3) struck out. 2B Ryan Arcadia (1-4) reached on an error by Flyers 3B Vince Harrison. Alberts also advanced to third base on the play. With runners at 1^st and 3^rd base, Joliet manager Wally Backman executed a double-steal. Arcadia took second base and Alberts stole home for a 4-2 Joliet lead.

 

The JackHammers added two more runs in the 5^th inning. Rios flew out to start the inning and Gomes grounded out.  Thon and Avlas hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 5-2 lead, as Thon scored on Avlas’s two-base hit. Pinckney singled home Avlas for a 6-2 Joliet lead.

 

Schaumburg scored three runs in the fifth inning against Shortell to get within one run at 6-5. Shortell lasted four and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits to get a “no-decision.”

 

Three more runs scored in the 6^th inning to give the JackHammers a 9-5 lead but the Flyers scored seven runs in the 7^th inning. Harrison capped off the scoring with a grand slam home run against LHP Ryan Paul (0-1) to make it 12-9.
