FLYERS SCORE FOUR IN THE 6th FOR A 6-2 WIN

 

SCHAUMBURG, IL-After the Joliet JackHammers (3-4) built a 2-0 lead through the first three innings, the Schaumburg Flyers (2-4) scored six unanswered runs to beat the Joliet JackHammers 6-2 before 5,288 fans at ALEXIAN FIELD on Friday night.

 

The JackHammers scored a single run in the 2nd inning against Schaumburg starting pitcher Dustin Glant (2-0). C Phil Avlas (2-4) reached base on a throwing error by Flyers 3B Vince Harrison. 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-4) followed with a beautifully placed single into centerfield on a hit-and-run. Avlas ended up at third base on the single by Pinckney. RF Wally Backman, Jr. (0-4) grounded out to second base to score Pinckney for a 1-0 Joliet lead.

 

Joliet added another runs thanks to some “small ball” in the 3rd inning. 2B Johnny Washington (1-3) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a groundout by CF Adam Klein (1-3). LF K.C. Herren (0-3) grounded out to second base to score Washington for a 2-0 JackHammers lead.

 

The Flyers answered back with single runs of their own in the 4th and 5th innings. In the 4th inning, C Richard Mercado (0-4) led off the inning by reaching second base on a dropped fly ball in left field. After 3B Vince Harrison (2-4) lined out to third base and 2B Jose Valdez (0-4) struck out looking, DH Felix Jose (3-3) hit an RBI single to score Mercado and cut the JackHammers lead in half at 2-1.

 

RF Victor Ferrante (1-4) touched up Joliet starter Brad Mumma (1-1) for a solo home run over the center field wall in the 5th inning to tie the score at 2-2.

 

Schaumburg erupted for four runs in the 6th inning against Mumma to take a 6-2 lead.

Harrison hit a double to lead off the inning. Valdez followed with a strikeout. The JackHammers intentionally walked DH Felix Jose (3-3) to set up the double-play possibility. LF Jeff Dunbar followed with an RBI single to score Harrison to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead. 1B  Jason Colson (1-4) hit a triple to right field and  scored on an error by the cutoff man to cap off the inning and give the Flyers a four-run advantage.

 

Mumma suffered the loss by pitching six innings and allowing six runs, (five earned runs), on eight hits. He walked one and struck out five.

 

Glant pitched the first complete game of the Northern League season on Friday. He allowed two runs, (one earned run), on five hits to get his second victory of 2009.

 

The JackHammers continue their series against the Schaumburg Flyers on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. RHP Rory Shortell (1-0, 1.50) starts for the JackHammers against LHP Carmen Pignatiello (0-1, 3.38) for the Flyers on Saturday night.
