RAILCATS BEAT JACKHAMMERS 5-1

GARY, IN-The Joliet JackHammers (2-2) offense managed only one run on six hits in a 5-1 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats before 5,401 fans on Tuesday morning at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary. The JackHammers trailed the RailCats 2-1 throughout much of the game before Gary scored three runs in the 8th inning to seal the victory.

The JackHammers scored a run in the third inning against Gary starting pitcher Tony Cogan (1-1). SS Kevin Rios (1-3) got aboard with a leadoff walk and moved to second base on a single by DH Joey Gomes. 1B Freddie Thon (1-4) laid down a bunt that went back to Cogan, who turned and threw to second base to force out Gomes. Rios moved to third base on the play for 3B Andrew Pinckney (0-4), who grounded out to second base. Rios crossed home plate for a 1-0 Joliet lead.

Gary (3-2) scored a run in the third inning against Joliet starter Grant Johnson (0-1), who retired the first eight batters he faced in the ballgame. The ninth place hitter 3B Jeff Beachum (0-1) was hit by a pitch. He moved to second base on a throwing error by Johnson. Leadoff man Mike Massaro (2-4) followed with an RBI double to score Beachum for a 2-1 Joliet lead.

Johnson lasted until the fourth inning when he ran into some trouble by walking Gary 2B Eric McNamee (0-1) to lead off the inning. McNamee followed the walk by immediately stealing second base. C Brett Wallace (0-4) struck out and Beachum walked to place runners at first and second base.

Manager Wally Backman followed with a pitching change and brought RHP Jason Novak into the game. Massaro flied out to center field, moving McNamee to third base. Novak unleashed a wild pitch that skipped behind the catcher Tug Gillingham to score McNamee for a 2-1 Gary lead.

Cogan went five innings and allowed one run on five hits. Johnson suffered his first loss of the season by logging four and one-thirds innings on Tuesday. He surrendered two runs on two hits, walking three and striking out seven.

The JackHammers managed only one hit after the fourth inning on Tuesday.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers signed IF Johnny Washington to a contract before the game on Tuesday. Washington started the 2009 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization at High A Inland Empire. He hit .286 with no home runs and no RBI. Washington’s addition means the JackHammers are at the Northern League maximum of 23 players on the roster. The JackHammers placed LHP Ryan Gehring on the Disabled List, retroactive to May 16.

The JackHammers and RailCats home-and-home series shifts to Silver Cross Field for the next two games. The two clubs battle tomorrow morning at 11:05 a.m. in a special School Day Matinee. The JackHammers will also host a pre-game catch on the field before the game.
