JACKHAMMERS SPOIL RAILCATS HOME OPENER WITH A 7-1 WIN

 

GARY, IN-RHP Rory Shortell (1-0) pitched six innings, allowing one run on four hits and 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-4) racked up four RBI including, a three-run home run in the eighth inning to give the JackHammers a 7-1 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats before 4,080 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Monday night.

 

The JackHammers and RailCats traded runs in the fourth inning to open the scoring on Monday. For Joliet, SS Kevin Rios (2-5) hit a one-out single and stole second base against Gary starter Onan Masaoka. After Rios reached base, DH Joey Gomes (1-5) struck out and 1B Freddie Thon (3-5) hit a bloop single over the head of Gary 2B Eric McNamee into right field for an RBI single. Rios scored for a 1-0 Joliet.

 

The RailCats scored a run against Shortell thanks to some timely hitting by leadoff man Mike Massaro (4-4). The designated hitter hit a leadoff double in the fourth and moved to third base on a groundout by SS Jay Pecci (0-3). RF Steve Haake (1-3) followed with an RBI single to score Massaro for a 1-1 tied score.

 

Joliet sent eight men to the plate for three runs in the 6th inning. CF Adam Klein (1-4) led off the inning with a single and scored on a double by Rios. Gomes popped out for the first out of the inning and Thon followed with a single. C Phil Avlas (0-2)walked to load the bases. Pinckney hit into a fielder’s choice that retired Avlas at second base. Rios scored to give the JackHammers a 3-1 advantage.

 

Thon, who scampered to third base on the Pinckney fielder’s choice, scored on an RBI single by RF Tim Alberts to round for a 4-1 Joliet lead.

 

In the seventh inning, Thon led off the inning with a double against Gary RHP Alex Rollin. Avlas followed with a walk and Pinckey pulled a pitch from Rollin over the right field wall to give the JackHammers a 7-1 lead.

 

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers made a roster move before the game, releasing OF Mike Coles and signing RHP Chad Blackwell to a contract. Blackwell, who last played in the Northern League in 2007 for Gary, comes to Joliet from AA Arkansas in the Los Angeles Angels organization. He was 1-0 with a 9.26 ERA in 8 appearances.

 

He pitched two scoreless innings for the JackHammers on Monday.

 

The JackHammers and RailCats finish their two-game series on Tuesday morning at 11:05 a.m. RHP Grant Johnson (0-2, 4.74 Daytona (A)/2-5, 5.55 Tennessee (AA) gets the start for the JackHammers against LHP Tony Cogan (0-1, 3.60 2009) for the RailCats.
