MUMMA’S MAGNIFIICENT IN A 2-1 JOLIET WIN

JOLIET-LHP Brad Mumma (1-0) allowed one run in six innings pitched and RF Tim Alberts (1-3) drove in two runs for a 2-1 Joliet JackHammers (1-1) victory over the Schaumburg Flyers (1-1) before 1,641 fans at Silver Cross Field on Sunday night.

In the second inning, Joliet started the scoring by pushing a run across home plate against Schaumburg LHP Carmen Pignatiello (0-1). C Phil Avlas (1-4) led off the inning with a single and moved to third base on a base hit by 3B Andrew Pinckney (2-3). Alberts, in his first start of the season in a JackHammers uniform, hit a sharp line drive off of Pignatiello’s glove that ricocheted to Jose Valdez. The Flyers’ second baseman threw out Alberts at first base. Avlas scored for a 1-0 JackHammers lead.

Schaumburg tied the game in the third inning. C Richard Mercado (1-3) started the frame with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt executed by SS Travis Brown (0-2). 3B Vince Harrison (1-4) followed with an RBI double to tie the score at 1-1.

In the fifth inning, Alberts drove in his second run of the game to give the lead back to Joliet. 3B Andrew Pinckney (2-3) hit a one-out triple and scored on Albert’s single for a 2-1 advantage.

After Mumma departed the game in the sixth inning, LHP Ryan Paul (1/3 IP) and RHP Drew Shetrone (1 2/3 IP) combined to work the 7^th and 8^th innings. RHP Jason Richardson worked a perfect 9^th for his first save of the season.

Loose Gravel: Pignatiello made his first start of the season for the Flyers. The Mokena resident and Providence Catholic graduate came to the Flyers after logging nine seasons in the Cubs organization (2000-2008) and a stint with the Minnesota Twins in spring training. He made six appearances in the Cubs bullpen during the 2007-2008 seasons.

The JackHammers will travel to Gary, IN for the first road contest of the 2009 season when they battle the Gary SouthShore RailCats at 7:00 p.m. on Monday night. RHP Rory Shortell (11-3, 4.83 for Atlantic City of the Can-Am. League) gets the start for the JackHammers against LHP Onan Masaoka for the RailCats.
