JACKHAMMERS WIN 6-2 IN WINDY CITY

CRESTWOOD, IL-LHP Brad Mumma tossed three scoreless innings and SS Kevin Rios went 2-2 with 2 RBI to lead the Joliet JackHammers to a 6-2 victory over the Windy City ThunderBolts in the conclusion of a home-and-home series at Standard Banks Stadium on Sunday night. The JackHammers’ 2009 season begins on May 15, 2009 against the Schaumburg Flyers at Silver Cross Field in Joliet City Center.

Joliet took advantage of some early Windy City errors to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. CF Adam Klein started the game with a walk and moved to second base on a groundout by DH Phil Avlas. An Andrew Pinckney single moved Klein to third base. The California native ended up scoring on a wild pitch.

In the fourth inning, the JackHammers tacked on a pair of runs. Avlas led off the inning by reaching second base on a dropped fly ball in right field. He scampered to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Pinckney. 1B Tim Alberts continued the offense with a single and went to second base on a single by LF Jake Whitesides. SS Kevin Rios hit an RBI single to score Alberts and make it a 3-0 Joliet lead.

Rios came up big again in the sixth inning when he hit an RBI single that brought home Alberts for a 4-0 JackHammers advantage.

The ThunderBolts scored two runs in the sixth inning to cut into the JackHammers lead at 4-2.

Once Mumma finished the game, LHP Dustin Taylor and LHP Ryan Paul followed with scoreless innings of work. RHP Jason Novak, RHP Alex VanOeveren, LHP Ryan Gehring, and RHP Jason Richardson each went one inning on the mound to finish off the victory.

The JackHammers continue their exhibition season on Monday afternoon at ALEXIAN Field in Schaumburg against the Schaumburg Flyers at 4:00. Pitchers for the game have not been announced.
