JACKHAMMERS WIN PRE-SEASON OPENER 7-5 OVER GARY

 

JOLIET-The Joliet JackHammers scored seven runs over the first four innings to beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 7-5 in the exhibition opener for both clubs at Silver Cross Field on Tuesday morning. IF Freddie Thon led the JackHammers with a two-run home run in the first inning. Newcomer Andrew Pinckney added a solo home run in the fourth inning.

 

The JackHammers scored the first runs of pre-season in the first inning against Gary starting pitcher Tony Cogan. LF K.C. Herron hit a one-out double off the left field wall. After DH Joey Gomes popped out, Thon pulled a pitch from Cogan over the right field wall for a 2-0 Joliet lead.

 

Joliet erupted for three more runs in the second inning. Pinckney led off the inning with a triple and scored on a groundout by 2B Wally Backman, Jr. SS Kevin Rios grounded out and RF Mike Coles singled. 1B Tim Alberts smacked a tripled to drive in Coles and scored on a single by the JackHammers’ leadoff man Adam Klein. Joliet amassed a 5-0 lead through the first two innings.

 

Gary awoke for five runs of it’s own in the fourth inning to tie the score at 5-5. The JackHammers re-took the lead in the fourth inning with two more runs. Pinckney led off the inning with a solo home run to center field. Backman, Jr. legged out an infield single and stole second base.  Rios singled to score Backman, Jr. and give the JackHammers a 7-5 lead.

 

RHP Aaron Trolia started the game for the JackHammers and worked three scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit, and struck out five RailCats. RHP Alex VanOeveren, (2/3 IP); RHP Jason Novak, (1 1/3 IP); RHP Drew Shetrone, (1 IP); RHP Devin Anderson, (1 IP); and RHP Jason Richardson, (1 IP); all got work for the JackHammers on Tuesday.
