BLUEFISH TAKE wild game from quack pack
Bridgeport, CT – September 19th – Despite a huge rally from the Long Island Ducks, the Bridgeport Bluefish scored twice in the ninth inning to defeat the Ducks 13-12 on Friday. Luis Lopez scored the game-winning run on a 2-out wild pitch from Long Island closer Charlie Weatherby. With the win, Bridgeport improves to 32-36 in the second half.
Bridgeport headed to the ninth trailing 12-11. Jay Caligiuri kept the Bluefish alive with an RBI infield single to tie the game. With Branden Florence batting and Lopez at third, Weatherby tossed a 2-2 offering into the dirt that passed catcher Jaime Pogue and allowed Lopez to come home.
The high-scoring affair featured one huge inning from each team. The Bluefish put together their biggest inning of the season, scoring nine times in the fifth, capped by an Alex Prieto two-run single. Long Island erased an 11-5 Bluefish lead with a seven-run eighth. Newly acquired Bridgeport pitcher Lance Stevens served up a two-run single to Ray Navarrete and a three-run jack to Carl Everett.
Prieto's perfect night at the plate led the 'Fish offensively. The Park City shortstop finished four-for-four with two doubles, two RBIs, two runs scored, two walks and a stolen base. Kevin Haverbusch drove in four runs for Long Island with a two-run single in the fifth and a two-run bomb in the seventh.
Andy Weimer (5-2) worked a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the victory. Weatherby (1-1) blew the save and suffered the loss.
The 'Fish look to make it two in a row tomorrow night at 6:05 P.M. Franklin Perez (5-3) makes his second start of the season for Bridgeport and faces Manny Ulloa (5-5).
