BEARS TAKE A BITE OUT OF THE 'FISH, WIN SERIES
Bridgeport, CT – August 20th – The Bridgeport Bluefish rallied late to tie the ballgame but could not keep the opposition off the board as the Newark Bears took a 4-3 decision Wednesday. Bridgeport erased a three-run deficit with a big seventh inning but a suicide squeeze by Bobby Hill drove in the winning run for Newark. Bridgeport falls to 17-21 on the half with the loss.
Raul Gonzalez and pinch-hitter Ramon Nivar hit back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the ninth. Pinch-runner Mike Just hustled home on a perfect bunt by Hill right back to pitcher Jeff Tam (2-4). Hill finished the evening two-for-four with two RBIs.
Bridgeport staged a seventh inning rally off Newark starter Jose Garcia (8-4) who had kept the 'Fish off the board until that point. Jesse Hoorelbeke cranked his 23rd home run of 2008 to lead off the inning and start the Bluefish scoring. After a Travis Ezi sacrifice fly, Bridgeport tied the game on Alex Prieto's second hit of the evening. Luis Lopez also finished the game with two hits.
Tam suffered the loss in his 1.1 innings of work in relief of starter Matt Sweeney. In his first start against his former team, Sweeney allowed three runs to score on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 7.2 innings of work. Garcia lasted eight innings for Newark and allowed three runs (one earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out six. Cory Willey worked a perfect ninth for his first save of 2008.
The Bluefish welcome the Lancaster Barnstormers to town for a three-game set starting tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M. 2008 Bluefish All-Star Barry Hertzler (7-7) will square off against Lancaster southpaw Eric Ackerman (5-6).
