GRIZZLIES SWEEP ROCKFORD; HOLD PLAYOFF SPOT
 
SAUGET, IL- Mike Breyman hit his fifth career grand slam, and drove in five runs Sunday night as the Gateway Grizzlies completed a three-game sweep of the Rockford RiverHawks.  The Grizzlies downed Rockford 14-7 in front of 4,918 at GCS Ballpark.

 

The win gives the Grizzlies (49-44) a one-game lead for the final wild card spot in the Frontier League with three regular season games to play.

 

Breyman paced an offensive explosion.  The Grizzlies scored their 14 runs on 17 hits.

 

Breyman was 3-4 with a game-high five RBIs.  The grand slam was part of a seven-run seventh inning.  It was his 24th home run of the year.  He now leads the league with 86 RBIs.  He has 312 for his Frontier League career that is tied with Fran Riordan for the most in league history.

 

The Grizzlies got a five-run first inning and built a 7-0 lead going into the fourth.  Rockford (48-45) scored seven unanswered to even the score at 7-7 going into the seventh inning.

 

Willie Keene was 4-6 with an RBI.  Alex Kerins was 3-5 with a pair of RBIs.  He finished a home run shy of the cycle.  Carter McQuigg was 1-4 with a home run and three RBIs.  Robbie Minor and Brandon Peters each added RBIs in the win.

 

Shannon Sprouse (1-0) earned his first win in a Grizzlies uniform.  Sprouse tossed two innings in relief allowing a run on two hits.  Joel Boeschen finished the game with two scoreless innings in relief. 

 

The Grizzlies begin a three-game series with the Southern Illinois Miners Monday night at GCS Ballpark.  Game time is 7:05 p.m.
