BREYMAN MAKES HISTORY IN RAIN-SHORTENED WIN FOR GRIZZLIES
O'FALLON, MO-Even Mother Nature couldn't stand in the way of Mike Breyman becoming the Frontier League's all-time hits leader. Breyman finished 2-3 Thursday night, collecting his 449th and 450th career hits as the Grizzlies downed the River City Rascals 8-4 in a rain-shortened five inning game at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
The previous record was held by current Kalamazoo manager Fran Riordan.
Breyman lined his 22nd home run of the season into the left field bleachers in the third inning to tie the record. Breyman led off the fifth inning, following a 1:30 rain delay, Breyman hit a slow roller to third that came to rest in the wet infield. He was reached first without a play.
The win keeps the Grizzlies (46-44) two games behind Rockford for the Frontier League's final playoff spot.
Trailing 3-0 in the third, Breyman's home run capped a five-run inning to put the Grizzlies in front for good.
The Rascals (43-37) took a 3-0 lead on three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning.
