Bridgeport, CT – August 10th – Just one day after blowing a five-run edge in the ninth, the Bridgeport Bluefish hung tight to their lead to defeat the Long Island Ducks 9-4. Bridgeport wraps up their home stand 2-4 and snaps a four-game winning streak for the Quack Pack. The Bluefish now stand at 14-14 in the second half.
For the second straight game Wilson Batista fueled the Bridgeport offense. The second baseman finished three-for-four with two RBIs and two runs. Batista sent a high fly ball into the net in left field in the fourth inning to bring his team within one run of the Ducks. Later, he padded the Bluefish lead with a double into the gap in right-center field that scored Steve Doetsch.
Doetsch also remained hot, going one-for-two with two walks, three runs and an RBI single as part of a five-run Bridgeport fifth. Luis Lopez and Jay Caligiuri both finished with two hits, a double, an RBI and a run scored. Alex Prieto drove in three runs with a second-inning single and a fifth-inning two-run double.
Matt Sweeney (2-5) looked effective in his second start since joining the Bluefish. The former Newark Bear held the Ducks to four runs on eight hits and one walk over his seven innings of work. The burly right-hander set the tone for the game with an eight-pitch first inning highlighted by two strikeouts.
The loss goes to Long Island starter Lance Davis (1-2). The southpaw gave up six runs on eight hits and one walk before leaving the game in the fifth with a strained muscle in his back.
Ray Navarrete started the scoring for the Ducks with a second-inning solo home run that cleared the left field net, the only extra-base hit for the Ducks. Damian Rolls and Rob Sandora (RBI) both finished two-for-four.
Bridgeport now heads on the road for seven days starting with a trip to Newark tomorrow. Barry Hertzler (6-7) gets the nod in the series opener against the Bears.
