'FISH SNAP BACK AT BLUE CRABS
Bridgeport, CT – August 6th – The Bridgeport Bluefish snapped their seven-game losing skid against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs with an 8-2 victory on Wednesday. Barry Hertzler (6-7) scattered Southern Maryland base runners all evening while the Bluefish offense played small-ball to provide the run support. Bridgeport improves to 13-12 in the second half and moves within three games of the first place Blue Crabs.
The Bluefish pushed two runs across in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-1 lead they would not look back on. Henry Mateo scored two runs and recorded three hits on the evening including a fifth inning infield single where Alex Prieto came across the plate after a throwing error by John Ramistella. Prieto also finished the night with three hits and scored his second run on a Luis Lopez sacrifice fly as part of a four-run seventh inning. Of the thirteen Bluefish base hits, only one went for extra bases (Lopez fourth inning double).
Hertzler allowed at least one base runner in each of his six innings but managed to work out of every jam, allowing just two runs to score with four batters fanned. The Central Connecticut State Alum had his sinker working well, inducing three Southern Maryland double plays on the evening.
Hertzler's counterpart Jon Connolly (3-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks over his four innings to suffer the loss. Pat Osborn led the way offensively for the Crabs going two-for-four with his 82nd RBI of 2008, tying him with 'Fish first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke for the league lead.
The Bluefish look to make it two in a row tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M. Bridgeport southpaw Ryan DiPietro (3-3) will face Bryan Morse (0-1) in the four-game series finale.
