BLUEFISH TAKE SECOND STRAIGHT OVER 'STORMERS
Bridgeport, CT – August 22nd – The Bridgeport Bluefish were able to hang on to their lead down the stretch to defeat the Lancaster Barnstormers 5-4 on Friday. The Bluefish took the lead in the fifth and saw some solid relief pitching to lock down the victory. The Bluefish notch their second consecutive victory over Lancaster to improve to 19-21 in the second half.
With his 24th home run of season in the fifth inning, Jesse Hoorelbeke gave his team a lead they would not return to Lancaster. The Bluefish slugger blasted an Erik Dessau (0-2) offering deep to left field to snap a 3-3 tie. Luis Rodriguez added an insurance run later in the inning with a single up the middle to score Ryan Bear. The middle of the Bluefish order (Luis Lopez, Hoorelbeke, Bear, Jay Caligiuri) finished a combined eight-for-17 with three runs and three RBIs. Caligiuri cranked his fourth home run of 2008 in the third inning.
Rafael Bergstrom (6-7) kept the Lancaster offense at bay in relief of Jordan Pals. Bergstrom went three innings and gave up just one run with three strikeouts to pick up his first victory since coming off the disabled list. Dessau allowed all five Bridgeport runs over his 4.1 innings to suffer the loss.
The 'Stormers jumped on Pals early on, scoring three runs over the first two innings. Michael Woods greeted the tall Bluefish starter with a solo home run to lead off the game. The Lancaster outfielder added an RBI single in the second and finished two-for-four with a run. David Castillo (double, run) and Mike Caruso (run) both finished with two hits.
The Bluefish bullpen did not allow an earned run over their five innings of work. Closer Eddy Ramos finished the game by striking out Ian Bladergroen with the tying run at third base. Ramos collected his 12th save of the season with two strikeouts in the ninth.
The Bluefish look to make it three in a row tomorrow with a 6:05 P.M. start time. Bridgeport will turn to lefty Ryan DiPietro (3-4) to keep the streak alive while Lancaster will send Chris Steinborn (0-2) to the bump.
