JACKHAMMERS “GO LONG” FOR A 9-5 WIN
JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers got home runs from Joey Gomes (1-4), Steve Garrabrants (1-3) and Jason Sherrer (2-3) to beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 9-5 before 3,914 fans at Silver Cross Field on Monday night. With the win, the JackHammers snap a three-game losing streak and stay three games behind
The Goldeyes scored a single run in the first inning. Fehlandt Lentini (2-5) reached on a three-base error and was retired at third base when Demetrius Heath (2-5) reached first base on a fielder’s choice. Brent Metheny (1-3) worked a walk and Kevin West (1-4) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chad Ehrnsberger (2-4) hit an RBI groundout to score Metheny for a 1-0 Goldeyes lead.
The JackHammers scored three runs in the third inning. Nick McIntyre (4-5) hit a one-out single and went to third base on a single by Cory Harris (2-4). McIntyre scored on a past ball for the JackHammers first run of the game at 3-1. Gomes followed with a two-run home run to tie the game at 3-3.
The JackHammers pushed across three runs in the sixth inning and one more run of insurance in the eighth inning. Garrabrants lifted a solo home run over the right field wall is the sixth inning to give the JackHammers a 6-3 lead. Chris Kinsey (1-4) followed with a single and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Sherrer. Joe Hooft (1-4) grounded out and pushed Kinsey to third base.
Back-to-back doubles by Doc Brooks (2-4) and McIntyre gave the JackHammers an 8-3 lead.
The Goldeyes got within three runs in the seventh inning by scoring two runs against Mumma. The left-hander lasted six and one-thirds innings and allowed five runs, (four earned runs), on eight hits to pick up the win.
Juan Diaz (1-4) had an RBI single in the ninth inning to give the JackHammers a 9-5 lead.
Loose Gravel: The JackHammers made a roster move before the game, activating RHP Chris Kinsey from the disabled list and placing him on the active roster as a rookie infielder. To make room for Kinsey on the roster, IF Mike Garcia was placed on the inactive list.
The JackHammers and Goldeyes finish their two-game series on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m. RHP Aaron Trolia (8-5, 3.82) gets the start for the JackHammers against RHP Andrew Walker (8-4, 4.17) for the Goldeyes. It’s the final Family Night of the 2008 season with kids running the bases after the game. Children that participated in the Jammers’ Book Buddies Program can exchange their vouchers for lawn seats to Tuesday’s game. The JackHammers will also host the Silver Cross Hospital Kids in Training Program with children working out on the field prior to the game and give away notebooks to the first 1,000 kids 17 and under courtesy of Skate West!
