REDHAWKS WIN 10-3 IN JOLIET ON SATURDAY

JOLIET, IL-The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (51-31) scored 10 runs on 13 hits to beat the Joliet JackHammers 10-3 before 5,505 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night. With the JackHammers loss and the loss by Kansas City on Saturday, Joliet remains two full games in back of Kansas City for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northern League.

The RedHawks started the scoring in the first inning on an RBI double by Jimmy Hurst (1-3). Carlo Cota (4-6) led off the inning with a single and scored on the two-bagger by Hurst for a 1-0 RedHawks lead.

The JackHammers tied the game at 1-1 in the first inning. Nick McIntyre (0-4) worked a one-out walk and went to second base on a single by Juan Diaz (1-3). Doc Brooks (3-4) was hit by pitch to load the bases for Cory Harris (0-3), who hit a sacrifice fly to score McIntyre.

In the third inning, Fargo CF Steve Mortimer (2-4) hit a two-run home run over the right field wall for a 3-1 RedHawks lead.

In the JackHammers’ third inning, Diaz worked a walk and moved to second base on a single by Brooks. A sacrifice bunt by Harris moved both runners into scoring position for Joey Gomes (2-2), who hit a two-run double to tie the game at 3-3.

Fargo-Moorhead scored three more runs in the fifth inning to knock Joliet starter Nate Sevier (4-6) out of the game. Sevier allowed six runs on seven hits to suffer the loss.

The RedHawks pushed across four more runs over the final four innings to make it a 10-3 advantage.

Loose Gravel: Catcher Jason Sherrer (1-4) made his first home start on Saturday. He went 1-4 with a single in the eighth inning. Sherrer was acquired from the Winnipeg Goldeyes for a played to be named later on August 4.

The JackHammers finish their three-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. RHP Vince Perkins (1-0, 1.62) will start the game for Joliet against RHP Gary Bakker (6-3, 3.44) Pre-game coverage begins at 4:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
