JACKHAMMERS SPLIT A DOUBLEHEADER IN GARY ON WEDNESDAY

GARY, IN-The Joliet JackHammers (34-39) split a doubleheader with the Gary SouthShore RailCats , losing 2-1 in game one before holding on for an 8-7 victory in the nightcap before 5,508 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Wednesday night. The JackHammers snap a six-game losing streak with the win in game two and head to Winnipeg to begin a series with the Winnipeg Goldeyes on Friday night.

The JackHammers scored a single run in the third inning against RailCats right-hander Travis Kerber, who came out of retirement to make his first start of the season in game one. Nick McIntyre (1-3) reached base on a two-out single and went to second base on a single by Juan Diaz.

Doc Brooks (2-3) hit an RBI single to score McIntyre for a 1-0 JackHammers lead.

Aaron Trolia (8-5) got the start for the JackHammers in game one. He pitched all six innings on the mound and suffered the definition of a “tough luck” loss. He struck out nine men in pitching all six innings but surrendered two runs in the sixth inning.

Jay Pecci (1-3) hit a leadoff single in the sixth inning and Tanner Townsend (1-2) followed with a two-run home run over the left field wall for a 2-1 RailCats lead.

In game two of the doubleheader, the RailCats scored a single run in the second inning against JackHammers LHP Dustin Taylor (4-2). Christian Guerrero (3-4) led off the inning by sending a solo home run over the right field wall for a 1-0 lead.

The JackHammers came back to score six runs in the third inning for a 6-1 lead. Jason Sherrer (2-2), making his first appearance in a Joliet uniform, led off the inning with a single and moved to third base on a double by Steve Garrabrants (1-4).

Nick McIntyre (1-4) followed with a two-run single to score two runs for a 2-1 JackHammers lead. McIntyre advanced to second base on a wild throw in from the outfield before scoring on a single by Juan Diaz (1-4). After the Diaz single, Doc Brooks (2-4) singled to put two runners on base for Cory Harris (1-2), who hit a three-run home run over the left field for a 6-1 JackHammers.

Joliet pushed across two insurance runs in the sixth inning. Joey Gomes (0-2) led off the inning with a walk and scored on a triple by Wally Backman, Jr. (1-3) Sherrer hit a sacrifice fly to score Backman, Jr. for a 8-1 Joliet lead.

The RailCats scored six runs against Joliet pitching in the sixth inning to come within one run at 8-7.

Taylor worked five and two-thirds innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits to pick up the win. Chad Fillinger worked a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his first save of the season.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers made a handful of roster moves before Tuesday’s midnight roster deadline in the Northern League. Joliet released LHP Matt Jernstad and signed RHP Ned Darley to a contract. Darley is entering his 17^th season of professional baseball and played last season with El Paso of the American Association.

Joliet also placed RHP Nate Sevier on the disabled list retroactive to August 4 and signed RHP Blake Ricken.
