REDHAWKS TAKE GAME ONE OF THE SERIES AGAINST JOLIET WITH A 7-2 WIN

 

JOLIET, IL-The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (43-26) scored four runs over the first three innings to beat the Joliet JackHammers 7-2 before 3,434 fans at Silver Cross Field on Friday night.

After Fargo-Moorhead scored one run without the benefit of a hit in the first inning, they pushed across two runs in the second inning against Joliet starter Aaron Trolia (8-4). Boomer Berry (2-3) led off the second inning with a single. After Jeremiah Piepkorn (1-4) flew out and Joe Mathis (0-4) struck out, Carlo Cota (0-3) walked. Ruben Salazar (2-5) hit a two-run double to make it 3-0 in favor of the RedHawks.

 

Piepkorn hit an RBI single in the third inning to increase the F-M lead to 4-0.

 

The JackHammers (33-34) scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning. Steve Garrabrants (0-2) reached first base on an error and scored on a double by Cory Harris (2-4). The JackHammers came within three runs at 4-1.

 

The RedHawks scored two runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead. RBI doubles by Steve Mortimer (0-3) and Berry gave the RedHawks a five-run advantage.

 

Trolia lasted four innings for the JackHammers and allowed four runs on three hits. He struck out seven men on Friday.                                                                                      

 

Joliet scored a run in the eighth inning. Doc Brooks (1-4) hit a leadoff single and moved to third on a single by Juan Diaz (1-4). Garrabrants hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Brooks to bring the JackHammers within four runs at 6-2.

 

Fargo-Moorhead scored a single run in the ninth inning off of Joliet closer Chris Kinsey. Salazar hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Alan Rick (1-5) to round out the scoring at 7-2.

 

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers have changed the following game times for their upcoming road trip to Gary and Winnipeg beginning on Monday, August 4.  Joliet will play a doubleheader in Gary on Wednesday, August 6 at 5:30 p.m. and another doubleheader in Winnipeg on Saturday, August 9 at 6:00 p.m. The two doubleheaders will make-up rainouts in Gary (June 8) and Winnipeg (July 12) earlier in the season.

 

The JackHammers and RedHawks battle on Saturday in game two of their series. The RedHawks will send RHP Brett Lawson (4-3, 5.09) to the mound against LHP Dustin Taylor (3-2, 6.70). The JackHammers will give away koozies to the first 1,000 fans through the gates on Saturday sponsored by the Will and Grundy Counties Building Trades.
