BLUEFISH UNABLE TO RALLY, DROP SECOND HALF OPENER
Bridgeport, CT – July 8th – The Bridgeport Bluefish started their second half of 2008 on the wrong foot with a 7-5 loss to the Lancaster Barnstormers on Tuesday. 'Stormer starter Josh Hall (5-1) worked through two rough innings early to post a solid outing while backed largely in part by a five-run second inning. The Bluefish have now lost three consecutive going back to the first half and stand at 33-38 overall.
Bridgeport scored all five runs between the third and fourth innings off Hall. Outside of those two frames the Lancaster righty allowed just two base runners. He finished with seven innings pitched and five runs scored on seven hits and two walks with five batters fanned for his fifth win of the season.
The Bluefish bullpen was brilliant in their extensive work throughout the contest. Starter Barry Hertzler (3-6) did not make it past the second inning after allowing five runs to score on five hits and two walks with one strikeout. Southpaw Ryan DiPietro did an excellent job of keeping the 'Fish in the game with his 4.1 innings of work. The Eastern Connecticut State alum allowed one run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Henry Mateo brought the Bluefish within one run after a two-run single in the fourth. The 2008 All-Star finished two-for-four with a stolen base to lead the Park City Nine. Brian Munhall reached base three times on the evening as the Bluefish catcher finished two-for-three with a double and a hit-by-pitch.
Lancaster catcher Kevin Kotch drove in two runs on his only hit of the evening, a second inning triple. Outfielder Michael Woods also drove in a run in the inning and finished three-for-five with a run. Matt LeCroy (RBI) and Jutt Hileman (double, RBI) both finished with two hits each for the 'Stormers.
The Bluefish look to even the series tomorrow in a special 10:35 A.M. first pitch. Rafael Bergstrom will take the mound (4-5) to oppose Eric Ackerman (3-5) of Lancaster.
