BLUEFISH SCHOOL 'SHARKS
Bridgeport, CT – July 26th – The Bridgeport Bluefish overcame an early deficit to defeat the Camden Riversharks 9-4 on Saturday. The offense backed up another solid start by Barry Hertzler (5-6). The Bluefish remain in first place in the Liberty Division by improving to 10-5 in the second half.
The Bluefish plated six runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead over the 'Sharks. Nine hitters reached base and all runs scored before Camden starter Kevin Mannix (1-5) could record an out. Bridgeport took their second lead of the game on a bases-loaded RBI single by Jay Caligiuri. Two batters later Jesse Hoorelbeke scorched a two-run double over the head of left fielder Ron Davenport to give his 'Fish a four run lead. Hoorelbeke's only hit of the evening brings him to 77 RBIs in 2008, one shy of the lead league held by Southern Maryland's Pat Osborn.
Hertzler looked like the pitcher who earned a spot on the 2008 All-Star team with his sixth quality start of the season. The Central CT State alum shut the 'Sharks down for eight innings, allowing three runs while scattering eight hits and striking out six.
The 'Fish continued to provide Hertzler with run support all evening. Branden Florence drove in shortstop Alex Prieto twice without recording a hit. The team's leading hitter took a Mannix offering off the top of his helmet with the bases loaded that forced Prieto in the fifth, and then later sent a sacrifice fly to right field with the former Major Leaguer at third. Steve Doetsch (two RBIs) also added his second home run of 2008, a solo shot driven into the net in left field.
Ron Davenport continued to have a solid series for Camden. A night after going four-for-five the Rivershark outfielder finished three-for-four with a double. First baseman Tyler Von Schell banged out his second home run of the season, a two-run shot off Hertzler that gave Camden an early 2-1 lead. Von Schell finished two-for-three with a run scored. Mannix took the loss giving up seven runs (six earned) on five hits over five innings.
The Bluefish look for the series victory tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 P.M. Tim Drew (3-3) takes the mound for Bridgeport to oppose Ryan Dittfurth (NR) of Camden. Sunday is Kids' Day at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, where all children are welcome to come out and run the bases following the contest.
