'FISH SURVIVE SERIES OPENER AGAINST BEARS
Bridgeport, CT – July 11th – The Bridgeport Bluefish collided with the Newark Bears in more ways than one on Friday evening. The Bluefish pulled out a 7-6 victory in the first game of the series, scoring the game-winning run in the eighth on an error by Newark first baseman Gerard Haran. Bridgeport outfielder Bobby Darula hit a high chopper to first base that Haran bobbled at the bag. Darula crashed into both Haran and pitcher Steve Kent as they all crossed first simultaneously. Pinch runner Henry Mateo came around from second to score the go-ahead run. With the unorthodox victory the Bluefish improve to 2-2 in the second half and 35-39 overall.
Bridgeport starter Tim Drew had the makings of a solid outing through his first four innings having allowed just three hits. A five-run fifth inning by the Bears knocked him out of the contest and gave Newark the lead.
The Bluefish immediately answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim the lead. Infielder Jay Caligiuri offered a beacon of life to the Bluefish offense when he drove in Calvin Pickering on a two-out go-ahead double. Caligiuri finished two-for-three with two RBIs and a run scored. Pickering also finished two-for-three with a double and two runs scored.
Franklin Perez (3-2) picked up the victory despite allowed the tying run to score in the eighth. Newark's Scott Knazek scored the run on a Keith Reed bloop RBI single to left. Perez worked out of the rest of the inning to keep the game tied.
Steve Kent (0-2) takes the tough-luck loss for Newark allowing the unearned run to score in his one inning of work. Kent came on in the eighth to relieve Carlos Mirabal. The Newark starter pitched seven innings and allowed six runs on ten hits and two walks with two batters struck out. Tim Sweeney had a solid night at the plate for the Bears, finishing two-for-three with a run scored.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 6:05 P.M. Bridgeport's Barry Hertzler (3-6) squares off against Pat Stanley (8-2) in a battle of 2008 Atlantic League All-Stars.
