BRIDGEPORT PICKS APART LANCASTER
Bridgeport, CT – July 9th – The Bridgeport Bluefish offense woke up in a huge way with a 12-6 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers on Wednesday. Tommy John's crew notched their first victory of the second half with a barrage of hits and plenty of run support supplied by designated hitter Calvin Pickering The Bluefish even up at 1-1 in the second half and move to 34-38 overall.
Pickering finished with five RBIs on the contest to fuel the 12-run assault. The former Major Leaguer drove in a run on a fourth inning sacrifice fly and a sixth inning single and then drilled a bases-clearing double in the seventh to pad the Bluefish lead. He finished two-for-three with a run scored. Jesse Hoorelbeke (RBI, three runs), Ryan Bear (RBI, two runs) and Alex Prieto (two RBIs, run) all added three hits and a double apiece.
Despite snapping his streak of eight consecutive quality starts, Bluefish starter Eric DuBose (5-2) picked up the win and remains unbeaten in his last nine starts. The southpaw worked seven innings and allowed a season-high five runs on eleven hits with one walk and three batters rung up.
Lancaster starter Eric Ackerman was not as effective as his lefty counterpart. The 2008 All-Star lasted 4.2 innings and gave up seven runs on ten hits with a walk and a strikeout. The big offensive provider for the 'Stormers was Matt LeCroy. The Lancaster first baseman finished three-for-five with a double and three RBIs. Four other starters for the Barnstormers (Michael Woods, Danny Gonzalez, Luis Perez, Lloyd Turner) recorded two hits apiece.
The Bluefish look to take the series from the 'Stormers in the rubber match tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M. Newly acquired Bluefish lefty Mike Connolly (0-0) will get the nod. Lancaster sends Yamel Guevara (1-2) to the hill in opposition.
