REDHAWKS OUTLAST JACKHAMMERS 4-2 IN 15 INNINGS

 

FARGO, ND-The Joliet JackHammers (32-31) and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (40-24) battled in one of the longest games in Northern League history on Sunday. After Joliet tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning, the two teams squared off until the 14th inning when each club scored a run before a two-run home run by Alan Rick in the 15th inning gave the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks a 4-2 win over the JackHammers before 3,139 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Sunday afternoon. The game lasted five hours and eight minutes and was eclipsed only by a five hour and forty-eight minute game between Joliet and Winnipeg on August 10, 2003 as the longest game in JackHammers history.

 

Fargo-Moorhead scored a run in the first inning against Joliet starter Aaron Trolia. Carlo Cota (1-7) hit a one-out single and moved to second base on a single by Ruben Salazar (3-8). Jimmy Hurst (4-8) lined a single to center field to score Cota for a 1-0 RedHawks lead.

 

The JackHammers scored a run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Dennis Blackmon, Jr. (1-4) reached base with a one-out walk and moved to second base when Mike Garcia (0-5) reached on an error. Joe Hooft (1-4) flew out to left field to move Blackmon, Jr. to third base. Doc Brooks (1-5) hit an RBI double to tie the game.

 

Aaron Trolia started the game for the JackHammers and worked six innings of one run baseball. He allowed eight hits and three walks while striking out four. Trolia worked out of trouble in the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, the RedHawks had two runners on base with no one out before Trolia induced fly outs by Salazar and Hurst. He struck out Rick to end the inning.

Chad Fillinger worked two scoreless innings and gave way to Tyler Meigs, who pitched three scoreless frames.

 

The two teams battled until the 14th inning when they traded runs. Dennis Blackmon, Jr. (1-4)  singled and Mike Garcia (0-5) walked. Hooft laid down a sacrifice bunt, which moved both runners into scoring position for Nick Prosise (0-1), who the RedHawks intentionally walked to load the bases. Nick McIntyre (1-6) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Blackmon, Jr. for a 2-1 JackHammers lead.  

 

The RedHawks scored a run in the bottom of the 14th inning on an RBI double by Steve Mortimer.

 

In the 15th inning, Hurst reached base with a single against LHP Matt Jernstad (0-1). Rick smacked a home run over the left field for a 4-2 win.


Loose Gravel: Both managers were ejected from the game on Sunday. Fargo-Moorhead skipper Doug Simunic was ejected in the eighth inning. Wally Backman was kicked out of the game in the 11th inning after Doc Brooks was ejected by first base umpire Randy Bertram.

 

The JackHammers return home to take on the Schaumburg Flyers at 6:05 p.m. on Tuesday night. Schaumburg will send LHP Brad Mumma (5-5, 5.10) to the mound against RHP Nate Sevier (4-3, 4.09) for Joliet. The first pitch is at 6:05 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 5:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com. It’s Kids Night with a special 6:05 p.m. start. Kids will work out on the field before the game thanks to Silver Cross Hospital and will run the bases on the field at the end of the game. It’s also a Reading Club night on Tuesday. Students that participated in the Jammer’s Book Buddies Program can exchange their reading club vouchers for tickets to the game on Tuesday.
