RAILCATS WIN 6-5 IN COME-FROM-BEHIND FASHION

 

JOLIET, IL-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (29-28) scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to come back and beat the Joliet JackHammers 6-5 before 4,914 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night.

 

The JackHammers (27-29) and RailCats traded runs in the first inning on Saturday. Jay Pecci (2-5) hit a two-out solo home run against the JackHammers starter Nate Sevier. Gary took the early 1-0 lead.

 

Joliet scored a run in the first inning against Gary starter Drew Dickinson. Mike Caruso (2-4) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a single by Nick McIntyre (2-4). Cory Harris (1-3) reached first base on an error by Gary 3B Tanner Townsend and on the play, Caruso raced in from third for a 1-1 tie.

 

The JackHammers took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Joe Hooft (1-4) led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Caruso. McIntyre reached base on a fielder’s choice where Hooft was retired at the plate. Steve Garrbrants (2-5) hit a double to score McIntyre.

 

Gary tied the game by scoring a single run in the fifth inning. Rob Marconi (2-4) worked a two-out walk and moved to second base on a single by John McCarthy (2-5). The RailCats and JackHammers were once again deadlocked, this time at 2-2.

 

In the JackHammers fifth inning, McIntyre reached base on a one-out single and moved to second base on a single by Garrabrants. Harris hit a three-run home run to make it 5-2 in favor of the JackHammers.

 

Gary fought back against Sevier in the seventh inning. McCarthy hit a one-out single and stole second base. Pecci followed with a two-run home run to get the RailCats within one run at 5-4.  Sevier logged seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out seven in a “no-decision.”

 

The RailCats completed their comeback with the “long-ball” in the eighth and ninth innings. Christian Guerrero (1-3) hit a solo home run to left field in the eighth against RHP Chad Fillinger (3-2). Marconi followed with a solo home run to lead off the ninth inning. Marconi’s home run gave the RailCats a 6-5 lead.

 

Loose Gravel: IF/OF Mike Garcia made his first start in a JackHammers uniform on Saturday. He started the game in left field and went 1-3 with a single in the fourth inning.

 

On Sunday night, the JackHammers and RailCats conclude their three-game series. Brian Forystek (0-1, 6.43) will get the ball for the RailCats against Dustin Taylor (1-2, 6.81) for the JackHammers. The first pitch is at 5:05 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 4:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com. The JackHammers host Derby Day at the ballpark on Sunday with miniature horse races at the ballpark. The profits will go to combat Juvenile Diabetes. It’s also a Family Autograph Sunday, with player autographs on the field after the game.
