GRIZZLIES UPEND FREEDOM IN 12 INNINGS
Mike Breyman laced a one-out two-run base hit in the top of the 12th inning Friday night to lead the Grizzlies past the Florence Freedom 8-5 at Champion Window Field in Florence, KY.
The win is just the second on the road for the Grizzlies (6-10) this season.
Ryne Malone led off the 12th inning with a bunt single to the left side of the infield. He went to second on a balk by Freedom pitcher Cody Castle (0-1). Stephen Holdren was intentionally passed before Michael Campbell advanced both runners with a swinging bunt in front of the plate. Charlie Lisk was intentionally passed to load the bases for Breyman.
The Grizzlies struck early. Malone hit his third lead-off home run of the year in the first to put the Grizzlies up 1-0 after one-half inning. Florence answered with two runs in it's half of the first frame. Tim Grogan answered with a lead-off home run for the Freedom, before they would add a run on a wild pitch to lead 2-1 after one inning. They would make it 3-1 with a run in the third.
Holdren led off the fourth inning with his fifth home run of the year to cut the lead to one. The long ball was his third in as many days. The Grizzlies took a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Malone added his second RBI of the night with a double.
The Freedom (8-7) took a 5-4 lead in the seventh on a two-run home run by Josh Lex off Grizzlies starter Erik Dessau. Dessau lasted seven innings. He allowed five runs, four earned on 10 hits. He struck out five.
Manny Paula singled to drive in the Michael Campbell in the eighth to knot the score at five. It stayed that way until the 12th.
Malone was 3-5 with the home run and a pair of RBIs. Paula was 2-5 with the two RBIs. Breyman was 1-4.
