PICKERING'S BLAST PROPELS BLUEFISH
Bridgeport, CT – June 10th – The Bridgeport Bluefish moved into first place in the Liberty Division for the first time since May 9th with a 3-2 win over the Camden Riversharks on Tuesday. The win was fueled by Matt Pike's strongest outing of the season and a clutch seventh-inning two-run homer by Bluefish DH Calvin Pickering. Pickering drilled the first pitch he saw from Camden starter Darren Sack over the wall in right field to drive in the go-ahead run. The win moves Bridgeport to 24-20 on the season.
In his longest outing of the season Pike (5-1) went seven innings and gave up two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Riversharks' catcher Jason Phillips' two-run homer in the second inning was all the offense Camden could muster as Pike kept base runners stranded all day. The Bluefish starter worked out of a huge jam in the fifth when he got Brett Bonevechio to strike out swinging with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Bluefish infielder Jesse Hoorelbeke also added a solo home run in the contest. His eleventh home run of the year ties him with Ray Navarrette of Long Island for the league lead. Sack (2-4) gave up both Bluefish homers to suffer the loss. The Camden righty went seven innings and gave up three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Riversharks' outfielder Josh Rabe posted a three-for-four afternoon with a run scored.
The Bluefish survived a scare in the ninth inning when closer Wes Wilkerson was hit in the pitching hand by a line drive. Bluefish manager Tommy John had no choice but to pull Wilkerson in favor of T.J. Tucker. Tucker managed to pick up the final two outs of the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
The 'Fish and 'Sharks will meet in game two tomorrow night at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard. Charlie Hesseltine takes the mound for Bridgeport opposed by Camden's Ryan Drese.
