JACKHAMMERS POUND T-BONES 15-8

 

JOLIET, IL-Wally Backman, Jr. (3-5) set a new career high with four RBI to help lead the Joliet JackHammers to a 15-8 win over the Kansas City T-Bones before 4,545 fans at Silver Cross Field on Friday night. The JackHammers also received perfectly balanced hitting from the middle part of their lineup. Corry Harris (2-3), Freddie Thon (2-4), and Joey Gomes (1-4) all contributed two RBIs apiece for Joliet.

 

The T-Bones scored a single run in the first inning against Joliet starter David Moraga (5-1). Rob Watson (1-5) reached base with a one-out single and moved to second base when Jim Fasano (1-4) was hit by a pitch. Ken Harvey (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Watson for a 1-0 Kansas City lead.

 

Joliet responded with three quick runs in the first inning against Kansas City starter Rick Rivas (2-4). Mike Caruso (1-3) was hit by a pitch and went to third on a single by McIntyre. Cory Harris hit an RBI single to score Caruso to tie the game at 1-1.

 

Thon hit an RBI double and Gomes responded with an RBI single to make it a 3-1 JackHammers lead.

 

Moraga surrendered a run in the third inning on a solo home run by Brad Correll (3-5) and yielded a pair of runs in the fourth inning. He pitched six innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. The left-hander walked just one and struck out six T-Bones on Friday.

 

The JackHammers broke the game wide open with three runs in the third inning on a bases-clearing double by Backman, Jr. Joliet took a 6-1 lead after three innings.

 

Joliet continued it’s dominance in the fourth inning. Caruso, who was on third base after leading off the inning by getting hit by a pitch, scored on a sacrifice fly by Brooks. Thon lined an RBI single to score Nick McIntyre and make it 8-1.

 

The JackHammers pushed across seven runs over the final three innings at the plate.

 

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers made a roster move before the game, releasing RHP Mike Colacchio and signing RHP Chris Buechner to a 2008 contract. Buechner, who started the season with Fort Worth (American Association, Independent), had a 0-0 record with a 6.35 ERA before being signed by Joliet on Friday. He made his JackHammers debut on Friday and worked the eighth inning. He allowed one run on three hits.

 

Loose Gravel: Backman, Jr. surpassed his previous career high of three RBI set on September 5, 2006 against Yakima while he was playing for Spokane in the Rangers system.

 

Joliet and Kansas City battle in game two of their three-game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Anthony Boughner (3-3, 4.50) takes to the mound for Kansas City against Nate Sevier (2-2, 3.66) for Joliet.  It’s the first day of Redneck Weekend on Saturday!
