REDHAWKS SNEAK BY WITH A 1-0 WIN

JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks battled to a standstill for much of the game on Wednesday but the RedHawks scored a single run in the eighth inning to beat the Joliet JackHammers before 2,638 fans at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday night. The JackHammers finish off their eight-game home stand with a game against the RedHawks on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.

The JackHammers did have opportunities to score in the game on Wednesday. The JackHammers left at least one man on base in each of the first six innings. With two outs in the fourth inning, Dorian Rojas (1-4) hit a single and moved to second base on a walk issued to Wally Backman, Jr. (0-3) Nick Prosise (0-2) worked a walk to load the bases. The JackHammers did not score in the fourth inning and stranded 10 baserunners for the game.

Aaron Trolia started the game for the JackHammers and pitched six scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits. The RedHawks loaded the bases in the second inning thanks to three walks by Trolia. With two outs, Trola stuck out Joe Mathis (2-4) to keep the bases load. The right-hander finished with a no-decision.

The RedHawks finally scored one run in the eighth inning. Ruben Salazar (1-4) singled and was lifted in favor of pinch-runner Kole Zimmerman (0-0). Home plate umpire Hank Himmanen called Joliet left-hander Dan Ziegler for a balk that pushed Zimmerman to second base. Steve Mortimer (1-3) singled to move Zimmerman to third base. Carlo Cota (0-2) hit into a fielder’s choice where Mortimer was retired at second base but on the play, Zimmerman scored for a 1-0 RedHawks lead.

Dan Ziegler (0-1) suffered the loss for the JackHammers. He allowed one run on two hits for his first loss of the season.

Joliet and Fargo-Moorhead finish off their three-game series on Thursday night. The RedHawks will send RHP Gary Bakker (1-2, 2.13) to the mound against RHP Nate Sevier (1-2, 4.71) for the JackHammers. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com. Its Thirst Quenching Thursdays with $1.50 pitchers of beer on the rooftop. The JackHammes will also present the Salute to Carpenters Night on Thursday.
