REDHAWKS WIN 9-3 ON TUESDAY

 

JOLIET, IL-The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (16-12) scored four runs in the second inning to take the early lead and sealed a 9-3 victory with two late-inning home runs to beat the JackHammers (15-15) before 4,526 fans at Silver Cross Field on Tuesday night.

 

The RedHawks scored four runs in the second frame came against Joliet starter David Moraga (3-1). Alan Rick (2-3) was hit by a pitch and moved to second base on a walk issued to Carlo Cota (2-3). Steve Mortimer (3-5) followed with an RBI double to score Rick and make it a 1-0 RedHawks lead.

 

Cota, who went to third base on the double by Mortimer, scored on a wild pitch by Moraga for a 2-0 lead. Zach Penprase (2-5) hit an RBI single to score Mortimer for a 3-0 lead. The RedHawks added one more run to take a 4-0 lead.

 

Fargo-Moorhead added single runs in the third and sixth innings. Moraga tossed six innings and allowed six runs, (five earned runs), on 10 hits to suffer his first loss of the season.

 

The JackHammers got on the board with a solo home run by Juan Diaz (1-4) in the sixth inning. Diaz hit his fifth home run of the season and got the JackHammers within five runs at 6-1.

 

Joliet scored two more runs in the seventh inning. Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4) reached base on a fielder’s choice. Joe Hooft (1-3) hit a single to move Backman, Jr. to second base. Nick Prosise (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Backman, Jr. and make it a 6-2 game. Nick McIntyre’s (2-4) single plated Hooft to make it 6-3.

 

The RedHawks scored three runs over the last two innings to round out the scoring at 9-3. Dan Maycock (1-4) hit a solo home run in the eighth inning and Mortimer followed with a two-run home run in the ninth.

 

Loose Gravel: Joliet CF Steve Garrabrants (0-0) left the game after the top of the first inning because of a hamstring injury. He did not get an at-bat in the game and was replaced by Dorian Rojas in the top of the JackHammers lineup.

 

Joliet and Fargo-Moorhead continue with game two of their three-game series on Wednesday night. The RedHawks will send LHP Broc Coffman (2-3, 4.19) to the mound against RHP Aaron Trolia (5-1, 3.48) for Joliet. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com. The JackHammers will give away a Bill Haller bobble head to the first 1,000 fans entering Silver Cross Field on Wednesday night. The former Major League Umpire will also be on-hand to sign autographs on Wednesday!
