JACKHAMMERS SURVIVE FOR A 5-4 VICTORY OVER WINNIPEG

JOLIET, IL-In a game that featured three lead changes and a benches-clearing brawl, the Joliet JackHammers (15-13) scored two runs in the seventh inning to survive with a 5-4 win over the Winnipeg Goldeyes before 4,802 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night. The game featured home runs from Juan Diaz (1-2) and Doc Brooks (2-4), who extended his hitting streak to 20 games with his performance.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored two runs in the third inning on a two-run home run by Kevin West (3-3). Brent Metheny (1-5) hit a two-out single and West pulled a pitch over the right-field wall. The Goldeyes took a 2-0 lead.

The JackHammers scored their first run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Diaz. The JackHammers came within one run at 2-1.

Joliet scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Steve Garrabrants (1-4) hit a one-out double and went to third base on a groundout by Nick McIntyre (0-5). Brooks hit an RBI single to score Garrabrants and make it a 2-2 tied game and Diaz was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch by Jackson. Joey Gomes (0-1) walked to load the bases. Freddie Thon (0-2) worked a walk to score Brooks and give Joliet a 3-2 lead.

The Goldeyes scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Poulin in the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3 but Joliet scored two runs in the seventh inning to take a 5-3 advantage. Brooks led off the inning with a solo home run against Goldeyes left-hander Dustin Pease (1-1). Diaz was hit by a pitch by Pease, inciting a benches-clearing brawl. After the fight was broken up, the JackHammers sent RHP Tyler Meigs (1-3) into the game to run for Diaz. Gomes walked to push Meigs to second base. The JackHammers pitcher moved up to third base on a flyout by Thon. Wally Backman, Jr. (0-3) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Diaz and give the JackHammers a 5-3 lead.

Meigs pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits to pick up his first victory of the season. Brian Forystek pitched six innings and allowed three runs on six hits to pick up the no-decision.

Loose Gravel: After Diaz was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning, he charged the mound and went after Goldeyes LHP Dustin Pease. The benches cleared and both teams were hit with a number of ejections. Pease, along with RHP Bear Bay and manager Rick Forney were ejected for Winnipeg. Diaz, Doc Brooks and Joey Gomes were tossed from the game for the JackHammers.

The JackHammers and Goldeyes finish off their three-game series on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. Joliet will send RHP Nate Sevier (1-2, 4.25) to the mound against RHP Andrew Walker (1-2, 5.68) for Winnipeg.
