JACKHAMMERS SNEAK PAST RAILCATS WITH A 6-5 WIN

JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (14-12) got solid pitching from David Moraga (3-0), who tossed seven innings and allowed two runs and timely hitting from Freddie Thon (2-4), who had the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning to give the JackHammers a 6-5 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats before 2,347 fans at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night.

The RailCats scored a single run in the first inning against Moraga. Eric McNamee (1-5) hit a one-out a triple and scored on a single by Jay Pecci (3-5) to give the RailCats a 1-0 lead.

The JackHammers tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run by Thon in the fifth inning. It was the second home run of the season for Thon, who powered a pitch over the right field wall.

In the sixth inning, the RailCats scored another run when Tanner Townsend (2-4) hit a triple and came home on an RBI single by Anthony Esquer (2-4).

Joliet pushed across four runs in the seventh inning. Juan Diaz (0-3) led off the inning with a walk and moved to second base on a walk issued to Dorian Rojas (1-2). Joey Gomes (1-3) hit a single to load the bases.

RailCats manager Greg Tagert went to the bullpen and brought in Brandon Higelin to relieve starting pitcher Billy Phillips (1-3).Thon reached base on a fielder’s choice to score Diaz and tie the game at 2-2. Wally Backman, Jr. (1-3) was hit by a pitch to force in Rojas and give Joliet a 3-2 lead. Joliet forced in two more runs in the inning, including an RBI single by Steve Garrabrants (1-3) to make it a 5-2 lead.

The RailCats mounted a late charge in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Equer. The JackHammers were up by only one run until Thon laced an RBI single in the ninth inning to score Rojas, who doubled with one-out in the inning.

Loose Gravel: Rojas came into the game for Cory Harris (0-1), who left the game in the second inning with a strained hamstring.

Joliet will entertain Winnipeg for the first of a three-game series on Friday night. Winnnipeg will send RHP Aaron Jackson (1-0, 3.07) to the mound against RHP Aaron Trolia (5-0, 2.27) for Joliet. The JackHammers will host fireworks sponsored by Aramark. It’s also Halloween Night! Fans that wear costumes will compete for great prizes!
