RAILCATS WIN 9-3; SNAP THREE-GAME JOLIET WINNING STREAK

 

JOLIET, IL- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (13-12) scored nine runs on 20 hits for a 9-3 victory over the Joliet JackHammers before 2,751 fans at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday night. The RailCats turned the tables on the JackHammers (13-12), who scored 34 runs on 40 hits over the previous two games against Kansas City.

 

The JackHammers scored two runs in the first inning. Doc Brooks (1-5) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a walk issued to Steve Garrabrants (0-1). Juan Diaz (0-4) walked to load the bases and RailCats starter Drew Dickinson (1-1) walked Cory Harris (1-2) to make it 1-0 Joliet. Joey Gomes (1-4) grounded into a double play to score Garrabrants from third base for a 2-0 JackHammers advantage.

 

The RailCats got on the board with a single run in the second inning against Joliet starter Nate Sevier (1-2). Eric Blakely (4-5) led off the inning with a double and went to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Rob Marconi (2-4). The RailCats got within one run at 2-1.

 

Gary scored two more runs in the fourth inning against Sevier. The JackHammers right-hander went six innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits to suffer the loss

 

With the score 4-2, Gary scored five runs in the seventh inning against Joliet pitching. After the JackHammers got one hit in the first inning, Joliet managed just three hits through the rest of the game. Harris had a one-out single in the second inning and Gomes had a one-out single in the sixth inning.

 

In the ninth inning, Joe Hooft (1-3) single and went to second base on a walk issued to Nick Prosise (0-1). Both runners moved up one base when Gary reliever Brandon Higelin was called for a balk. The JackHammers had two runners in scoring position for Garrabrants, who lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Hooft to make it 9-3.            

 

Loose Gravel: Garrabrants made his first start since May 23 on Wednesday. He missed 16 games due to a strained oblique muscle. Garrabrants did pinch-hit in the ninth inning on Tuesday night in Kansas City.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     

 

Joliet takes on Gary in game two of the brief two-game series on Thursday. Gary will send RHP Billy Phillips (1-2, 5.01) to the mound against LHP David Moraga (2-0, 3.54) for Joliet.
