JACKHAMMERS WIN 9-4 IN GARY ON SATURDAY NIGHT

GARY, IN-The Joliet JackHammers (11-11) scored five runs over the first five innings and pushed across three runs in the eighth inning to seal a 9-4 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats before 4,049 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Saturday night.

The JackHammers started the scoring with a run in the second inning. Cory Harris (0-3) worked a leadoff walk against Gary starting pitcher Billy Phillips (1-2). Freddie Thon (3-5) hit a single to move Harris to second base. Joe Hooft (2-5) followed with an RBI single to score Harris and give the JackHammers a 1-0 lead.

Joliet pushed across two runs in the third inning. Nick McIntyre (2-5) reached base with a one-out walk and went to second base on a walk issued to Harris. Thon and Dorian Rojas (1-4) hit back-to-back RBI singles to score McIntyre and Harris respectively and increase the Joliet lead to 3-0.

Single runs in the fourth and fifth innings gave the JackHammers more insurance. Hooft led off the fourth inning with a single, moved to second base on a groundout by Nick Prosise (1-5) and scored on a single by McIntyre. Joliet took a 4-0 lead after four innings,

In the fifth inning, Harris led off the inning by reaching on an error and moved to second base on a single by Thon. Eric Scriven (2-3) hit an RBI single to score Harris and give the JackHammers a 5-0 lead.

David Moraga (2-0) pitched five and two-thirds innings for the JackHammers. He did not allow a run until the sixth inning. Eric McNamee (2-4) led off that inning with a single and went to second base on a single by Jay Pecci (3-5). Mike Reese (0-4) worked a walk to load the bases. Tanner Townsend (0-4) hit a sacrifice fly to score McNamee and get the RailCats on the board at 5-1. Moraga departed the game and the RailCats scored two more runs in the frame to get within two at 5-3.

The JackHammers scored three runs in the eighth inning to seal the victory. Prosise hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Doc Brooks (2-5). McIntyre hit a single to push Brooks to second base. Both runners scored on a double by Juan Diaz (1-5). The JackHammers took an 8-3 lead.

The two clubs traded runs in the ninth inning to round out the scoring at 9-4.

Loose Gravel: The game started at 7:58 p.m. after a rain delay of one hour and fifty-eight minutes. The JackHammers had a rain delay of one hour and fifty-four minutes that delayed the start of their game on Tuesday in Fargo-Moorhead.

Joliet takes on Gary to finish off their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
