JACKHAMMERS POUND OUT 16 RUNS FOR A 16-4 VICTORY IN FARGO ON THURSDAY

FARGO, ND-The Joliet JackHammers (10-10) pounded out 16 runs on 18 hits to beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 16-4 before 3,521 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Thursday afternoon. Starting pitcher Aaron Trolia tossed seven innings of one-run ball and Freddy Thon finished 4-4 with a grand slam and eight RBI.

The JackHammers struck first with three runs in the second inning against RedHawks right-hander Dane Renkert (1-2). Juan Diaz (3-4) led off the inning with a double and went to third base on a groundout by Cory Harris (0-3). Thon hit an RBI double to score Diaz and make it 1-0 Joliet.

Nick Prosise (2-5) hit an RBI double to score Thon and give the JackHammers a 2-0 advantage. Wally Backman, Jr. (2-4) followed with a single to move Prosise to third base. The JackHammers catcher scored on a past ball to make it 3-0.

The RedHawks got one run back in the bottom of the second inning. Carlo Cota (1-4) reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored when Steve Mortimer (2-4) followed with a double. The JackHammers took a 3-1 lead into the third inning.

Joliet broke free with four runs in the third inning thanks to the grand slam by Thon. Joey Gomes (0-2) reached first base with a one-out walk and went to second base on a single by Diaz. Harris worked a walk to load the bases. Thon stepped up to the plate and pulled a pitch over the right-field wall for a 7-1 JackHammers lead.

The JackHammers exploded for five runs in the seventh inning. Nick McIntyre (2-6) and Gomes reached base on a single and walk respectively. Diaz followed with an RBI single to score Gomes and make it 8-1.

Harris walked to load the bases for Thon, who hit a two-run single to give the JackHammers a 10-1 advantage. The JackHammers would score two more in the inning to take a 12-1 lead.

Trolia pitched seven innings for the third time this season. He is a perfect 4-0 in 2008.

The JackHammers scored a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers runs (16) and hits (18) on Thursday surpassed 2008 single-game highs in both categories. The previous high for runs in a game was 13 set against the Schaumburg Flyers on May 28 at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers produced 17 hits against Winnipeg on May 24.

Loose Gravel: Joliet manager Wally Backman was kicked out of the game in the second inning after arguing a call made by first base umpire Kurt Branin.

Joliet takes on Gary on Friday night in game one of the three-game weekend series. Joliet will send RHP Nate Sevier (1-1, 4.30) to the hill against LHP Tony Cogan (2-1, 2.11) for the RailCats.
