SCHAUMBURG WINS 7-3 ON THURSDAY MORNING

JOLIET, IL- The Joliet JackHammers lost 7-3 to the Schaumburg Flyers on Thursday morning at Silver Cross Field. With the loss, the JackHammers fall to 7-7 and head to Winnipeg to begin a season-long 11 game road trip on Friday night.

Joliet scored two runs in the first inning against Flyers starting pitcher Steve Shippey (1-2). Doc Brooks (3-4) led off the inning with a single and went to third base on a double by Nick McIntyre (2-4). Brooks scored on a wild pitch and the JackHammers took a 1-0 lead.

McIntyre, who moved to third base on the wild pitch by Brooks, scored on a fielder’s choice by Cory Harris (2-4). The JackHammers took a 2-0 lead.

The Flyers scored two runs in the second inning against JackHammers starter Nate Sevier (1-1). Peanut Williams (1-4) reached first base on an error and Vince Harrison (1-5) singled him to second base. Jermaine Allensworth (3-4) hit an RBI single and Chris Gaskin (1-3) hit a RBU sacrifice fly. The Flyers tied the game at 2-2.

Joliet scored a single run in the second inning. Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4) singled and moved to second base on a groundout by Nick Prosise (0-4), Harris went to third on a wild pitch and scored when Eric Scriven (2-4)reached on an error for a 3-2 JackHammers lead.

Schaumburg scored two runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead. Rontrez Johnson (2-6) led off the inning with a solo home run. Of the four runs that the Flyers scored in the first two innings, Johnson’s run was the only earned run.

The Flyers added single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings as well to take a 7-2 lead. Sevier suffered the loss by pitching five and two-thirds innings and allowing six runs, (three earned runs), on nine hits. Shippey pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on seven hits to pick up the victory.

Loose Gravel: The Northern League handed down suspensions to the three JackHammers involved in Wednesday’s benches-clearing braw between the JackHammers and Flyers. Manager Wally Backman and pitching coach Floyd Youmans were issued two game suspensions and began serving their respective suspensions on Thursday.

Harris was issued a one-game suspension and appealed the suspension. He went 2-4 on Thursday.

Joliet heads to Winnipeg to begin a three-game series at CanWest Global Park on Friday night. The pitching match-up is as follows: LHP Brian Forystek (0-1, 5.14) for the JackHammers against (LHP) Zach Baldwin (1-0, 3.55) for the Goldeyes.
