JACKHAMMERS COME BACK FOR A 13-10 WIN

JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (7-6) survived a benches-clearing brawl, three ejections and a 10-2 deficit to come all the way for a 13-10 victory over the Schaumburg Flyers before 2,731 fans at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday night. The JackHammers look for the three-game sweep against the Flyers at Silver Cross Field on Thursday morning at 11:05 a.m.

The Flyers scored a single run in the first inning against Joliet starting pitcher David Moraga. Rontrez Johnson (4-6) led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a walk issued to Ryan Luther (1-4). Bo Hart (2-5) grounded into a double play at third base. Johnson was forced out at third base and Luther moved to second base on the play.

Peanut Williams (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Luther and give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Schaumburg scored another run against Moraga. Jermaine Allensworth (0-3) led off the inning with a walk. Chris Gaskin (3-5) singled Allensworth to second base and Lance Koenig (0-4) hit a single to load the bases. Mark Haske (3-5) flew out to right field and Johnson grounded out to JackHammers short stop Dorian Rojas. Allensworth scored for a 2-0 Flyers lead.

The JackHammers scored a single run in the fourth inning. Wally Backman, Jr. (2-3) reached first base on a fielder’s choice and went to second base on a single by Nick McIntyre (3-3). Doc Brooks (2-4) hit an RBI single to bring the JackHammers within one run at 2-1.

The Flyers pushed across five runs in the sixth inning against the JackHammers. Johnson had the key hit in the fifth inning, an RBI double that scored two of their five runs and gave the JackHammers a 7-1 lead.

Joliet scored a run in the sixth inning to help the JackHammers get within five runs at 7-2. Juan Diaz (2-3) worked a two-out walk and went to second base on a single by Cory Harris (1-3). Freddy Thon (1-4) hit a double to score Diaz and Harris was thrown out at home plate. He ran into Flyers catcher Ryan Luther, starting a benches-clearing brawl.

Schaumburg scored three more runs in the seventh inning on a three-run home run by Johnson to take a 10-2 lead.

The JackHammers scored 11 more runs over the seventh and eighth innings to take the lead. Joliet scored two of its three runs in the seventh inning on a two-run single by McIntyre. The JackHammers got within five runs at 10-5.

Joliet scored eight runs in the eighth inning to the lead. The JackHammers had the bases loaded thanks to two hit batters and a single. With the score tied at 10-10, Flyers right-hander Jim Popp (1-1) unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Diaz to score and give the JackHammers an 11-10 lead. Dorian Rojas followed with a two-run home for a 13-10 win.

Kevin Altman (1-0) got the win by pitching one and two-thirds innings for the win. Drew Shetrone pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers and Flyers engaged in a bases-clearing brawl at the end of the sixth inning. The brawl started when JackHammers CF Cory Harris collided with Flyers catcher Ryan Luther at home plate. Luther held onto the tag from the relay throw to retire Harris for the final out of the inning.

After the play was over, Luther leaned down and spoke to Harris. The Joliet CF responded by throwing his helmet at Luther. Harris was immediately ejected from the game while Luther stayed in the game.

JackHammers manager Wally Backman and pitching coach Floyd Youmans were ejected after the fight. Flyers manager Steve Maddock was also ejected in the seventh inning.
