MORAGA’S MAGIC! JACKHAMMERS WIN 8-2

JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (4-5) received six and one-thirds solid innings from LHP David Moraga (1-0) and scored eight runs on 17 hits to beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 8-2 before 3,376 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night.

The JackHammers scored three runs in the first inning against Winnipeg starter Andrew Walker (0-1). Joe Hooft (3-6) led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a single by Doc Brooks (1-5). Goldeyes CF Fedhlandt Lentini overran the baseball and Hooft scored for a 1-0 JackHammers lead. Joey Gomes (1-5) truck out and then Brooks followed by stealing third base.

Cory Harris (1-5) hit an RBI single and Dorian Rojas (1-2) reached first base on a fielder’s choice. Two runs scored and the JackHammers took a 3-0 lead.

The Goldeyes scored a single run in the fourth inning. Demetrius Heath (2-4) led off the inning with a double and scored on a double by Brent Metheny (1-4). The Goldeyes were within two runs at 3-1.

Joliet scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Diaz led off the inning with a single and was forced out at second base when Harris reached second base on a fielder’s choice. Harris stole second base and went to third base on a groundout by Freddy Thon (2-4). Wally Backman, Jr. (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Harris and give the JackHammers a 4-1 lead.

In the sixth inning, Hooft led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a single by Gomes. Juan Diaz (2-3)hit an RBI single to score Hooft and make it a 5-1 lead.

The Goldeyes tacked on a run in the eighth inning against Joliet reliever Craig Pfautz but the JackHammers pushed across three runs in the eighth inning to round out the scoring. Diaz worked a one-out single and went to second base on a single by Thon. Eric Scriven (1-1) pinch-hit for Rojas, who had to leave the game with a hamstring injury, and hit an RBI single. Diaz score to give the JackHammers a 6-1 lead.

RBI singles by Nick Prosise (1-1) and Nick McIntyre (3-5) gave the JackHammers an 8-2 lead.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers made a roster move before the game. Joliet activated 1B Freddy Thon from the disabled list and placed 2B Steve Garrabrants on the disabled list.

Loose Gravel: The game was delayed for about 15 minutes in the bottom of the second inning as Winnipeg catcher Dustin Richardson was injured on a backswing by JackHammers DH Juan Diaz. Paramedics stabilized Richardson and took him to a local hospital for observation. He was later diagnosed with a fractured skull. Injuries also hit the JackHammers, as Rojas and RHP Jared Sutton had to leave the game with injuries.

Sunday night the JackHammers and Goldeyes play game three of their four-game series. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive the JULIE, Inc. Magnets Schedule Giveaway.
