WINNIPEG EARNS A 5-4 COME-FROM-BEHIND VICTORY

JOLIET, IL- The Winnipeg Goldeyes (4-4) scored four runs over the eighth and ninth innings to come back from a 4-1 hole and beat the Joliet JackHammers 5-4 before 4,202 fans at Silver Cross Field on Opening Night. Third baseman Brent Metheny (2-4) hit an RBI single in the ninth inning to score Demetrius Heath (1-5) for the winning run.

The JackHammers started the scoring with a single run in the third inning. Wally Backman, Jr. (2-4) singled and went all the way to third base when Nick Prosise (1-4) grounded out. Backman, Jr. ended up at third base. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Steve Garrabrants (0-4) and Joliet took a 1-0 lead.

Joey Gomes (1-3) hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give the JackHammers a 2-0 lead.

The Goldeyes scored one run in the fifth inning against Aaron Trolia. Trino Aguilar (2-4) hit a leadoff single and moved to second base when Antoin Gray (1-3) was hit by a pitch. After Colin Roberson (0-4) struck out, Dustin Richardson (1-4) reached on a fielder’s choice. Aguilar moved to third base. Heath hit an RBI single to score Aguilar and cut the JackHammers lead in half at 2-1.

The JackHammers scored two runs in the sixth inning. Nick McIntyre (1-4) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a groundout by Gomes. Juan Diaz (2-3) received an intentional walk and Cory Harris (1-4) hit an RBI single. McIntyre scored to make it a 3-1 lead.

Dorian Rojas (1-4) added an RBI double and Joliet took a 4-1 lead.

The Goldeyes scored three runs in the eighth inning against Joliet reliever Kevin Altman. Metheny reached base on a one-out walk and scored on a double by Kevin West (2-5). Aguilar singled to move West to third base. Gray hit a two-run double to score West and Aguilar and tie the game at 4-4.

In the ninth inning, Heath reached base on a fielder’s choice and stole second base against Joliet closer Drew Shetrone (0-1). Metheny hit an RBI single to score Heath and the Goldeyes took a 5-4 lead.

Saturday the JackHammers continue their home-opening series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The JackHammers will present fireworks after the game brought to you by Pepsi. The JackHammers will also giveaway 2008 season magnet schedules to the first 1,000 fans brought to you by JULIE, Inc. It’s also 50’s night. Fans are encouraged to dress up in styles from the 1950’s.
