JACKHAMMERS LOSE 5-4 IN THE NINTH INNING TO GARY

GARY, IN-The Gary SouthShore RailCats scored two unearned runs in the ninth inning to come back from a one-run deficit to defeat the Joliet JackHammers 5-4 before 1,795 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Sunday afternoon. The JackHammers (2-2) now start a three-game series on Monday against the Schaumburg Flyers at ALEXIAN Field. The JackHammers 2008 home schedule opens on Friday, May 23 at 7:05 p.m. against the Winnipeg Goldeyes for Harris Bank Opening Night at Silver Cross Field with fireworks to follow the game.

The two clubs battled in a scoreless tie until the sixth inning when the RailCats scored two runs. Rob Marconi (1-3) led off the inning with a walk and went to second base when Mike Reese (0-3) was hit by a pitch.

Eric McNamee (0-3) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position and the JackHammers decided to intentionally walk Jay Pecci (0-3) to load the bases.

Christian Guerrero (1-3) hit an infield single to score Marconi and Reese scored on a throwing error by JackHammers short stop Dorian Rojas to make it a 2-0 Gary lead.

Joliet starter David Moraga was charged with both runs. He pitched six innings and allowed two runs, (one earned), on three hits. He walked one and struck out one in a no-decision.

The RailCats scored a single run in the seventh inning before Joliet pushed across four runs in the eighth inning. Nick Prosise (1-4) led off the inning with a single and went to second when Joe Hooft (0-3) walked. Steve Garrabrants (2-5) followed with a three-run home run to tie the game at 3-3.

After Dorian Rojas (0-4) and Joey Gomes (1-4) popped out, Juan Diaz (1-4) singled and Cory Harris (1-4) doubled. The RailCats intentionally walked second baseman Nick McIntyre (2-3) to load the bases and face Wally Backman, Jr. (0-1)

Doc Brooks (0-0) pinch-hit for Backman, Jr and worked a walk to force in Diaz and give the JackHammers a 4-3 lead.

In the ninth inning, Joliet reliever Tyler Meigs walked Guerrero to lead off the inning. Tanner Townsend (1-4) reached base on an error by Joliet second baseman Nick McIntyre. Guerrero scored all the way from first base to tie the game at 4-4.

Rohde reached base on an error by Joliet short stop Dorian Rojas. The error also pushed Townsend to second base. John McCarthy (0-1) pinch-hit for catcher Brett Wallace (1-3) and grounded into a fielder’s choice. The JackHammers forced out Townsend at third base.

Marconi came up to the plate and hit an RBI single to score Rohde and win the game for Gary.

Loose Gravel: Sunday was the first start for David Moraga since July 25, 2002 when he pitched six innings for the Newark (NJ) Bears and gave up one run to pick up a victory against the Bridgeport Bluefish (CT).

Joliet now travels to Schaumburg to start a three-game series with the Flyers on Monday night. RHP Mike Schellinger (6-4, 3.62) 2007 Quad Cities (Cardinals, A) makes his first start of the season for Joliet against Schaumburg RHP Matt Varner (2-3, 3.80) 2007 Lincoln (American Association).
