FIRST THINGS FIRST! JACKHAMMERS SCORE SEVEN IN THE FIRST TO WIN 8-6 AT GARY

 

GARY, IN-The Joliet JackHammers (2-1) took advantage of two critical errors in the first inning to score seven runs and earn an 8-6 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (1-2) before 2,939 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Saturday night. The JackHammers look to win the series on Sunday afternoon before heading to Schaumburg to start a three-game series Monday night. The JackHammers 2008 home schedule opens on Friday, May 23 at 7:05 p.m. against the Winnipeg Goldeyes for Harris Bank Opening Night at Silver Cross Field with fireworks to follow the game.

 

Six of the seven first inning runs for the JackHammers were unearned, as Joliet sent 11 batters to the plate. Steve Garrabrants (1-3) led off the inning with a walk and went to third base when Dorian Rojas (1-5) singled. Joey Gomes (2-4) hit a fly ball to right field that Christian Guerrero dropped. Garrabrants and Rojas scored and the JackHammers had a 2-0 lead.

 

Juan Diaz (0-4) also reached on an error to score Gomes and give the JackHammers a 3-0 lead. After Cory Harris (0-2) was hit by a pitch, Doc Brooks (1-2) struck out and Eric Scriven (0-4) grounded out. Scriven’s groundout scored Diaz from third base and made it a 4-0 advantage.

 

Nick Prosise (1-3) singled and scored Harris to make it 5-0. The JackHammers contributed two more runs and took a 7-0 lead.

 

The RailCats scored three runs on four hits in the first inning against Joliet starter Aaron Trolia. The JackHammers’ lead was 7-3 after one inning of play.

 

Trolia pitched six innings for the JackHammers and allowed three runs on nine hits.

 

Joliet pushed across one run in the third inning. Brooks led off the inning with an error and advanced to third base when Scriven reached base on an error by Gary short stop Jay Pecci. Prosise hit a sacrifice fly to plate Brooks and give the JackHammers an 8-3 lead.

 

Gary scored two runs against JackHammers reliever Kevin Altman in the eighth inning and set up a save situation for Drew Shetrone in the ninth. The JackHammers closer yielded a run on three hits in the ninth inning but still picked up his second save of the season.

 

Loose Gravel: Joliet made a roster move before the game, signing RHP Jared Sutton and placing 1B Freddy Thon on the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle. Sutton pitched three games for Wally Backman in 2007 with the South Georgia Peanuts before heading to the Milwaukee Brewers organization to finish off the season. Sutton went 1-0 with an ERA of 3.00 in nine games for West Virginia (A) in the Brewers system this season.

 

The JackHammers and RailCats complete their four-game series on Saturday night. RHP David Moraga (9-3, 3.64) for Newark in 2002 gets the start for Joliet against LHP Jeremy Plexico (2-5, 4.07) for Harrisburg in 2007 (Washington, AA) for Gary.
