Goals from Blanco, Rolfe up for 2007 Sierra Mist Goal of the Year

Vote online at MLSnet.com to determine this season’s most remarkable goal

 

(Oct. 25, 2007) – Voting for the 2007 Sierra Mist Goal of the Year kicked off recently on www.MLSnet.com, with goals from Fire attackers Cuauhtémoc Blanco and Chris Rolfe available for selection. Fans may vote to determine the most remarkable goal of the 2007 regular season, choosing from 34 goals including the 29 winners of the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week and five additional nominees.

 

Cuauhtémoc Blanco :: Aug. 18

Scoring his first MLS career goal in the 43rd minute against Real Salt Lake on Aug. 18, Blanco trapped the ball and ripped a strike from 20 yards out into the upper-right corner of the goal. That game-winning goal took home the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week award in Week 20.

 

Chris Rolfe :: Sept. 20

Rolfe scored his fifth goal of the season in spectacular fashion against FC Dallas last on Sept. 20, drilling a long-range strike from over thirty yards out past FCD goalkeeper Dario Sala and into the upper right corner netting in the 56th minute of play. Rolfe's impressive score was Chicago's lone goal in the 1-1 tie with the “Hoops” and earned the 24-year-old the Sierra Mist “Goal of the Week” award for Week 25.

 

Cuauhtémoc Blanco :: Sept. 29

Blanco's score against Chivas USA on Sept. 29 was among the nominees for the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week for Week 26. In the 24th minute, Blanco took a 10-yard running start on a 30-yard free kick and the shot sailed over the wall of defenders and just out of Guzan's diving reach.

 

The voting breakdown as follows:

1. Oct. 25 – Oct. 31 – Voting to select top 10 goals from original 34 nominees

2. Nov. 1 – Nov. 7 – Voting to select top five goals

3. Nov. 8 – Nov. 14 – Voting to select the 2007 Sierra Mist Goal of the Year from the top five goals

 

The Sierra Mist Goal of the Year will be announced on Nov. 16, 2007.
